Commentary on the Washington State Pest Control Association's "Findings and Recommendations"--Items Stacked up on the Home

IS68         Finding:     Stored items are up against exterior wall (see diagram).

Recommendation:     Move stored items so they are at least four feet away from structure exterior.

Much like the firewood issue, as mentioned in a previous post, debris that is stacked too close to a home causes a number of problems for a home inspection:

1.  If the siding can't be seen, it can't be commented upon.  Occassionally, items stacked up on a home may conceal areas of damage or decay that the buyer will only find once they move into the home.

2.  If there are many things stacked up on the home it can trap moisture and air, leading to mold, decay or other forms of damage.  As such, it is actually considered a conducive condition to wood destroying organisms.
