It is the fastest growing equine sport. Cowboy Mounted Shooting. What fun! This year the National Finals were held in Buckeye and we went out a couple of days. We also have friends who compete.
The guns are .45 revolvers. The ammo is black powder loads, so there is smoke and fire coming out of those barrels! The noise is loud, horses wear earplugs as do many two legged competitors.
There are 50 possible patterns to run in a standard arena and the horse has to be fast, agile and willing to give the team a shot at winning time. There are penalties for missing a balloon, dropping a pistol, running the wrong course, and falling off the horse.
There is a competition near you, wherever you live! Go see it, or get a horse and go do it.
