Localism logoThis morning we put up a new "build" of ActiveRain.com, that added the ability for members to flag blog posts.  At the same time we also released several enhancements to our consumer portal Localism.com that is currently under development.  If you missed our original post earlier this week about localism, you can find it here.  Localism is a work in progress but we want to include the ActiveRain community in the development process, so their feedback can help shape the final site.

Here's some of the enhancements to Localism that went up this morning:

  1. Instead of linking back to ActiveRain.com to show the full text of the articles (blog posts), they are now displayed on Localism.com.  This creates a much better user experience, and a more professional looking article.  Each article still includes contact information for the author as well as a picture featured prominently.
  2. Profiles are also now displayed on localism instead of linking back to ActiveRain.com  Again, they are displayed differently and look much cleaner, each profile also links to the (consumer oriented) articles written by that person.
  3. Tweaked the content ranking algorithm, to help push the best content up higher on the pages.
  4. Only cities/counties with content written by members are displayed.  As ActiveRain members add regional consumer content via their blogging efforts, additional cities/counties will start to appear on Localism.  For example Marysville, WA real estate information...

More enhancements are sure to be coming next week.  Feel free to let us know what you think, what directions we can take to improve the site, and if you find anything that isn't working correctly.

Matt, this stuff literally sends "chills" up my spine!

Matt, can you do my website?  This is way out of my league and am glad that you guys can put this talent to such good use.  Thanks.

So will we be running into duplicate content issues?

12/22/2006 03:31 PM by Ken Smith (Suburban House Hunters)

Wow - It looks really excitng - just learned about it - I knew I should not go on vacation.

How do you post pictures for the cities?

12/22/2006 03:34 PM by MaryAnn Morrar ~ La Jolla (Coldwell Banker)

Matt, that's great.  So many new enhancements it's overwhelming at times.

12/22/2006 03:35 PM by Cynthia Sloop (Community Property Manager)

Ken: No, we shouldn't hit duplicate content issues.  Right now we are hiding the the actual articles on Localism.com from search engines, so they won't see duplicate content.  We have some other experiments we are working on right now that should provide an even better solution.

12/22/2006 03:35 PM by Matt Heaton (ActiveRain Corp.)

MaryAnn: Members will have the ability to post pictures very soon, and we'll let you know when that feature is available.  We just loaded an initial data set in from a couple states, mainly for testing purposes, but we want to get good pictures representing all the states/counties/cities/(neighborhoods?) soon.

12/22/2006 03:37 PM by Matt Heaton (ActiveRain Corp.)

I love this new feature.  I'm on a mission to have content on LOCALISM for every county and many cities in my market area.

My thought is that this will be better for Google than the pathetic Base.Google.com.  These pages should be indexed quickly.

This is also a terrific outlet for real estate articles.

Love it.  This is a winner.

Christmas presents early!  Thank you gentlemen, it looks very interesting.  I'll be anxious to see how it develops.  Tell us Matt, did AR turn out anything like you'd expected?  i'll bet there are a LOT of things you couldn't have foreseen.  Same thing for Localism.com, me thinks.

12/22/2006 04:32 PM by Bill Williams (Coldwell Banker Tomlinson Group)

Matt, I really like the look of Localism, you guys are full of surprises.

12/22/2006 04:50 PM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

This is terrific. I am looking forward to using it, adn to see the response from others.

12/22/2006 05:40 PM by Jeff Dowler

Matt, I have a question. On the state level, all of the articles seem to be from the realtors group. It's not until you get to the counties and cities that you see mixed group content. The main page has it mixed. Is it just washington that is showing up only realtors? Or is is only realtors providing the type of content you are looking for so far?

12/22/2006 06:53 PM by Mark Flanders (Olympic Northwest Mortgage)

Mark: All the content is mixed from realtors, loan officer, stagers, etc.  To show up at the local level it has to be properly catagorized as "About a Region", "Market Report", "News and Events", or a "Listing", and region has to be specified.

Example:

LUV this new stuff...Santa's Wish List is getting shorter. THX!

Mark, I worked out a deal with Matt. He's only going to display MY blogs in Washington in exchange for a case of Guiness each month. Maybe you should consider moving?

I am wondering if you are going to be listing the different Real Estate-related profiles by type (as you do now on the AR Home Page) so people can just click on which profession they are looking for?  I see that you already have "Real Estate Professionals" and "Mortgage Professionals" that can be easily accessed, but then you have to go through an entire roster in order to see all of the other professionals/fields that were listed in my state.

Not trying to be critical, just practical.

Sure appreciate the updates on how things are changing on localism.com - they're happening so quickly that it's really good to have them pointed out.

Thanks for the additional info on the flag - I thought it was just for bad stuff, so am glad to hear that it's for good potential features as well.

Matt,

This is about to change AR as we know it!!!  More local content, that's for sure!!!

12/23/2006 10:57 AM by Chris Tesch College Station, Texas Real Estate (RE/MAX Bryan College Station)

Thanks for giving us a look at what should be a great resource for consumers. Will agents be able to be included across multiple locations? For example, I'm in Henderson, NV but also work in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Boulder City. If I provide content for those areas as well, I'd like to show up in the list of 'Top Agents.'

12/23/2006 10:59 AM by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

Wow!  You are doing a great job...   I look forward to more as you progress....

Matt... late to the party. But from what I can see, awesome job. As some others in here, I missed this the first time around.  Thanks

I echo John Novak's comment/question - how do we get listed in all the areas we actually service - rather than having to pick just one?

12/24/2006 10:12 AM by Suzanne Marriott, Associate Broker, CLHMS, e-PRO (Keller Williams Realty Professional Partners)

John/Suzanne: We are working on a way for members to get listed in all their market areas states/counties/cities/neighborhoods pretty soon.  For simplicities sake we've kept a one member to one city relationship up to this point.  For right now the best way to get a presence in your other market area's is to write content, because if people go to a city and read the content they will see your bright shiny face and contact info.

12/24/2006 02:58 PM by Matt Heaton (ActiveRain Corp.)

Matt - Mark Flanders and I have been creating local groups for each of the towns in our area, and posting local content into each group. But it would be nice if there were some way to have our profile show up in those towns as well. Otherwise, I need to create a seperate profile for Bremerton, Poulsbo, Silverdale, Port Orchard, Seabeck, etc.. I don't know that there would be any way to do it fairly. I guess you just need to pick the town that best reflects your primary market.

I can say with a great deal of confidence, that ActiveRain has been on my best Christmas Gifts this year. Merry Christmas! Keep up the amazing work.

merry christmas active rain

12/25/2006 08:10 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Rich: Yes, pick the best town to reflect your primary market right now.  It won't be long before you can be listed in multiple towns under the same profile though...

Great stuff! I see that you have a check box for the photo upload to keep em honest about copyrighted material but....I see quite a few submitted where the copyright is on the image itself and not attributed to the poster. May want to include the flag option for photos on localism.com?

Thanks for all the fantastic....and free stuff!

Wow....that's great!!!  I can't keep from saying congratulations again.  Everything sounds so exciting.
