Google is becoming quite the powerhouse with all the services (most of which are free) they offer. They are going head-to-head with Microsoft Office, all smartphone platforms, Mapquest, etc., etc. You name it, they are probably working on it or buying it.

I recently opened a gmail account for personal email and such, so I set up iGoogle as my home page. iGoogle lets you customize content just like many of the others out there. I recently set up Google Readeron my iGoogle page to read blogs and news feeds right on my home page. On the iGoogle page, it provides a scrolling list of the most recent posts from all of your subscriptions. So, you can get quick headlines of everything and open the ones that interest you, or you can click through to the Google Reader page which lets you organize and view data in several different formats.

The user interface is very easy to use and adding new subscriptions is easy. There is a feature to work offline as well for those who might be using a laptop. You can share posts with others using the system, email posts, etc. It offers quite a robust set of tools, but what I like most is that I can get all the same feeds just by logging in from any computer.

If you use gmail or iGoogle, give the reader and try and set up your favorite ActiveRain blogs.

I am amazed how far Google has come.  I use their services all ay long.

Randy - I'm starting to use their products more and more. In fact, I started another one not too long ago...GrandCentral. It's a phone system they purchased. I'll have to post some notes on that too.

Google is becoming bigger than MS in some respects.  I wonder if there is as an intense dislike for all things Google like there is/was for Micro$oft?

Matthew - I've begun to wonder the same thing myself. We tend to like the underdog, and for a long time Google was the underdog. Now Google is quickly becoming topdog. I think what makes Google a little different is that many of their services are free for the consumer, and there are a lot of competitors.

They do a good job, and continue to improve the product!

Frances - I agree. I think they do a good job, and I'm generally impressed with most of their offerings. I like this reader program showing every time I open the browser; I get a quick read of some of my favorite blogs and can easily access additional information if I'm interested.

I agree that with Google actively improving their offerings as well as most products being free "warms my cockles"

Hi John,

I guess great minds think alike because I just got set up with Google Reader about a week ago. (finally!)  I haven't figured out how to get Active Rain onto my list though.  Do I have to have IGoogle for that...?  I love The Google too.  I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Matthew - I think were in the same boat. Thanks for stopping by.

Rita - I don't think you need iGoogle for that. At the bottom right of an ActiveRain blog page is a link that says RSS 2.0. If you click on that it will open a new page. Just copy that web address and paste it in the Google Reader box for Add a subscription.

Frank - It's a very flexible page that you can customize in many different ways. You get the content you want without all the ads and such like most other sites.

Thanks John,  Don't know why I didn't know that.  The sites I have in my reader now I entered into the reader by just using the search function but I couldn't find AR that way.  Thanks for the help.

PS.  I think I'm only going to enter the blogs that I am subscribed to.  Otherwise I imagine it could be a little overwhelming.....

Rita - it can get overwhelming very quickly. I only enter my favorite blogs in the reader as well as some real estate newsfeed sites.

Lysa - I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is sharing this reader. Thanks for stopping by.

I use Google Reader a lot, but haven't used their desktop. I'm assuming we could put our current home page as one of the features on the google desktop, so maybe I'll give it a try.

Sharon - I haven't tried Google desktop either. I just use Google's customizable homepage - iGoogle. I'm always a little wary about installing software, especially software that does searches of my computer and the internet. I just don't think that's a great combination for security.

Michael - I've thought about trying out the desktop, but I think I have enough programs running in the background. What was once a Porsche is now a Yugo. If I service it, maybe a Cadillac.
