'Ralphie's House' courtesy of Rick Shaw and CS Museum WebsiteEveryone is in a festive mood, what with Hanukkah upon us and Christmas approaching. What better time than now to do a fun post about Cleveland's Hollywood connection. Did you know that a lot of movies were filmed here? That we have a vibrant independent film community? And that (drum roll) the Christmas Story House is now a museum in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood? Let's start with The Christmas Story movie.

The Christmas Story movie came out in 1983 - I saw it in the theatre. Who knew it was going to become the cult classic it is, now featured every year in a Christmas Day Marathon on cable's TNT channel. I left the photo large so you cultists can see the leg lamp in the window. BTW you can buy them in at least three sizes at the Museum; one for every budget! lol

Fast forward to 2006, Thanksgiving Weekend. I am driving in my car and a DJ on the radio is interviewing his mother who was in the movie! The Grand Opening of the Museum was that weekend and what a frenzy it was. TV coverage, radio coverage, parties, etc. The Museum and Ralphie's house from the movie are on W. 11th Street in Cleveland, just South of Clark. I checked it out last Wednesday. There were over 38 people in the Museum's souvenir shop (buying things like the famous fishnet covered leg lamp!), and people on tour in The House. I decided to walk the neighborhood. Met quite a few neighbors, chatted with two long time residents on their porch and a visitor from two streets away named Tyrone. Tyrone hit it right on the head when he said "...this section of Tremont is now the hip place to be, not around all those galleries and fancy restaurants..." Who can argue with that? Not me!Check out The Christmas Story House website and stop for a visit when you get a chance...it's fun! This made me feel really good: a fellow Realtor® was serving our Country in Korea when the movie came out. Terry Deininger was telling how he sat down to watch and quickly started recognizing some of the locales. He kept saying 'that's Cleveland!' and his buddies thought he was crazy until they got farther into the movie. He said it was really special to see those 'clips' of home while he was so far away overseas.

Other movies made here? How about this list: Spider man III (just last year), and Airforce One, from 2003. Yes Harrison Ford was in town. Antwone Fisher was an Ohio man who grew up having to overcome so much you would expect to have never heard about him. Wrong. He joined the armed forces, became a screen writer, is a positive influence and mentor to many, wrote an autobiography called Finding Fish, and had a namesake movie directed by none other than Denzel Washington. Both the book and the movie are awesome. There are plenty others: The Fortune Cookie (1960s), The Deerhunter, (1970s) and of course the hysterical Major League to name a few. My suggestion is to enjoy a piece of Cleveland movie history over the Holidays and check out one of these films.

What movies have you seen that feature your area of the world?  And for you Northeast Ohioans: what other 'Cleveland movies would you like to give a shout out to?

I enjoyed my real estate blogging break here (although I did write about a house, even if it was a movie house!). Post to you later. Peace out - 3C (cleveland carole cohen) (my new nickname courtesy of my pal from  Chicago, Stager Craig Schiller)

Have you seen the BMW commercial with the kids scratching on the box? I gave a copy of "The Christmas Story" to my 35 yr.old step sister a few years back. Her reaction was almost the same as the kids. What is it about that movie?

Monika: Come to Cleveland maybe you can become a movie star!  I bet we can come up with a movie made near you in the next couple of days; let me ponder

Dena: I have NO idea what it is about this movie but I was talking to a few people at work about it (none of them are even my age, all three were under 40) and they were reciting dialogue to each other lol  I'll keep my eye out for the BMW commercial, ty

Ok...you asked.  Mystic Pizza is our big hit movie although it was a no-name movie at the time, Julia Roberts and Matt Damon went on to become stars.  I never really liked the pizza there but now tourists flock to the place just to say they've been there.  Lots of people in the area were extra's in the movie including two of my agents at the time.

Linda: I love that movie. Is it still owned by the same people? My favorite parts of it are the scenes of the lobsters and shore. How fun!

I could have sworn you wrote a blog about front porches (Linda). Maybe it was Eileen. I was going to link it here; anyway, this porch is fairly typical in size to porches here lol.  We do like our porches!

Hey 3-C, I like that by the way. I justed watched a Christmas Story the other night. One of my all time favorites. Also, The Deer Hunter was on the other night as well. Another one of my favorite movies. I guess Ohio has put out some pretty good stuff.

I live in Central Florida so we have had tons of movies. One of my favorites is Monster with Charlize Theron(spelling?).

Hi Broker Bryant, ty lol  Ms Theron (I don't know for sure how to spell it either) is a great actress and I loved that movie too; very intense. The Deer Hunter can only be watched when you are on meds or manic, IMHO lol.  Very dark!  But Meryl Streep makes everything worthwhile.

I memed early, and just posted it on that first blog of Jay Thompson's.

Love the picture of the house. In the Chicago area we have had so many movies made... many of them very good... The Fugitive comes to mind.. But out west here in St Charles they filmed much of the Tom Hanks movie: Road to Perdition

Chicago is one of the most filmed cities in movies (it's a huge portion of the city's budgeted revenue each year) and while we don't watch much for modern film, it's fun to see our neighborhood all the time as the featured location for films.

I didn't know Deerhunter was filmed in Ohio.  I thought it was filmed in PA.  One of my favorites.  I still sing "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" when I've overindulged with college fraternity brothers.  It's actually quite becoming for six middle-aged men to do.

Angus: I recall pretty, established neighborhoods in that Tom Hanks movie; I remember someone telling me once about how they knew when a certain film crew was in town because all the cars became 1940 models. Anyway, that was a good movie!

Gabriel, thanks, you guys have a history of movie-making.

Brian, now there is a visual! It's possible some of it was made in PA. But the movie took a while to make and a lot of the nightime street scenes and church scenes (including the wedding!) were in the Tremont area.

Now I will be humming that song!

Carole, Monika is correct that no movies were filmed here in little Hampstead but I am sure there were a bunch filmed in the surrounding cities of Portsmouth, Nashua and Manchester.

The one thing about Cleveland that always surprised me is that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is there. I never would have thought Cleveland would have been the host city.

I always pictured cities like San Fran, LA or NY would have been.

Nice post Carole,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Jay, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!

Ok, now you got me going lol. Cleveland was the home of one of the first FM Rock and Roll stations (I believe San Fransisco was too). Alan Freed (DJ'd here for a while) coined the phrase rock and roll. I'll have to do a separate post about it, but trust me when I say, lots of rock roots here lol.

Carole/3C - great photo!  I always thought the "leg lamp" was hilarious!  I did catch a news story about this house recently.  I also saw Antwone Fisher (the movie, not the person!) when it was on HBO and that was quite a story.  The movie "Big" with Tom Hanks was filmed in part in Cliffside Park, NJ, the town next to where I grew up.  I like to see in the movie credits where a movie was filmed... unfortunately, that info is usually almost at the very end of the credits!

Leanne: I agree about the 'location' credits;   and I usually want to see the list of songs and/or performers too, so most people are gone from the movie theatre when we leave yes?

Dena you could be correct, ty. I think Eileen Landau may have as well. I'll look for both of them thanks

Carole, yes... I (and whomever I'm with) tend to be among the last to leave the theater.  Hubby is usually interested in seeing who sings which songs (sometimes I am, too) and I like to see where it was filmed (sometimes he does, too).  Sometimes we look for an actor's name, if we know we've seen them before but can't recall their name.

If anyone's interested... here's janeAnne's blog post about porches.

We've had some movies made in and around my areas - Portsmouth, Newcastle, etc.  Can I remember any of the names of them, though??  Nope, not a one - wonder if that means they weren't all that memorable??

A portion of the Mighty Ducks was filmed in the ice arena a block and a half from our former house in New Hope, Minnesota.  When the crews came to town and set up their trailers in the parking lot, it was all the talk of the town.  Our son was intent on a career on the screen at the time so when they advertised for locals for the stands, I gave permission for him to skip school and "work".  What he didn't realize is that it was indeed work.  They had to be there before 7 AM and often worked 12-14 hour days.  The locals were all served sandwiches for lunch and given a modest sum for their presence in the stands.  The second day of filming my son decided he didn't want to act.  They filmed the same scene "at least a hundred times" and he was bored to tears.  We were rewarded to see him in the film as they were carrying the stretcher up the aisle from the ice, our son is next to the actors.  Obviously, we have a copy of the film and call it our son's debut on the big screen!

Merry Christmas, Carole.

Carole - I can't remember the last time I went to the movies and saw a really bad one.  TG!!!  Oh, and I forgot... we've had some movies filmed in South Florida.  Two I can recall are Striptease (with Demi Moore) and Bad Boys II, among others.  Miami, especially has had many movies (and a few TV shows) filmed there.

MF - I love imdb.com and go there regularly when looking for info.

Bonnie ty for your Holiday wishes. You never know, I have a friend who didn't really get into acting until he was in his forties and he has now done background work for The West Wing, a few movies (A George Clooney movie the name escapes me) and about four plays with lead roles. So the future is always wide open for us to follow our dreams. I'm glad you have a movie memory with family in it!

Leanne, I loved Miami Vice it was so cutting edge when it came out and the music too. Strip Tease I saw and enjoyed. Don't know Bad Boys II I guess I will be on imdb.com too lol

The worst movies I have ever seen, IMHO were Soylent Green and Barry Lyndon; OMG Barry Lyndon! It was deadly   This year I went to a movie with a friend; I can't even remember the title but it was a Sci Fi thing, second part, I mean, the 'things' in the movie were all mean; I know! Underworld!  YUK

Late to the party, but if you all don't mind...  Christmas Story ranks in the top 5 of my fave movies and I have it on DVD.  Jean Shephard is the real reason the movie is so special, but also because it's very close to reality for me.  Our entire family quotes lines from the movie and I'm prone to watching it in the summer after a tough day, a la "Okay. Tonight it's pizza in the living room and we are watching "A Christmas Story"!!!  Collective response from family, "Bad day?"

I'm in Dayton but since the Southwest Ohio I-75 corridor is becoming a metroplex, I'll throw this movie into the list.... Cincinnati was the setting (or just filmed?) for Rain Man w/ Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise.  Been a long time since I last saw that movie, but if I remember some scenes correctly... Miami (OH) University had a fabulous radio station that played cutting edge, alternative music- unbelievable how they found the music they did. Anyway, at one point the Hoffman character keeps repeating the station's tagline- something like "WOXY- the X"   The shot of them walking down a country road was shot in beauiful Southwest Ohio.

It wasn't shot here but if you've ever seen "The Birdcage", the Gene Hackman character talks about the foliage in Ohio and how beautiful it is on I-75 in the fall.  I laugh every time I hear it as I drive Cincy to Findlay on a regular basis and there ain't much beautiful about that trip regardless of the season.

A belated Happy New Year to all!

Hi Theresa, it's very nice to meet you! OMG Rain Man is one of my favorite movies (since Tom C wasn't exhibiting his full blown weirdness yet I went to see it LOL) And I had NO idea about the SW Ohio connection for it. I have seen Rain Man several times and I love that reference to the radio station, who knew it was a Miami U station....you rock thank you! (PS: Birdcasge was an awesome movie too lol). Thank you so much for adding this, it's good stuff! I will be looking for your posts!

Theresa: I want to add this too: you make me want to investigate Jean Shepard which I will do today. And movies and music are two things that can just make us feel good when we need it, aren't they! I'm glad TCS does that for you!
