When Do You Put Your Tree Up???

Here is a question for you - when do you put your tree up? Some put it up right after Thanksgiving, but not everybody -

When we lived in Germany, it went up on the 24th! The kids would go out to play or to visit a relative and the tree was put up while they were gone! They were told the Christ Child had put it up and brought the gifts. That evening -yes, the 24th - the gifts would be opened!

I changed the rules a little as they got older and put the tree up right after St Nicholas Day on the 6th of December. Before the kids were born, we used real candles on the real tree. We also kept a bucket of water in the corner, just in case, and never walked out of the room without blowing the candles out!

After we moved to the States I continued to use the ornaments we had made from straw, wood and ribbon, but used strings of clear lights rather than candles. We used to open half of the gifts on the 24th in the evening, as was done in Germany, and the other half of the gifts on the morning of the 25th.

This tradition we have continued with, honoring both their German and American heritage!

So when do you put your tree up?????

I'm with Christine...the weekend after Thanksgiving! It's cool to see you mix a little of German tradition with American...the best of both worlds!

I was surprised to find this post in the meme group, but 'thought I'd comment anyway.  My oldest son's birthday is December 20, so we always waited 'til after his brithday dinner to put up the tree.  However, our other holiday decorations went up any time after Dec. 1.

30+ Years in Real Estate!

After living in Tucson, AZ for 6 years (we were from the east coast), I started putting our tree up on Thanksgiving day (I was used to the cold, gloom, etc of VA, IN; AZ was just too sunny and warm all year round), and have continued to do that 25 yrs later. We have an artificial tree, so up a month works fine. I normally start taking it down shortly after Christmas, including the lights outside, so that once New Year's Day arrives, I'm ready to plunge into the New Year.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Holiday Season!

Debbie- yes, back when I put a tree up, I also did artificial - in the heat a regular tree just doesn't make it very long! Now that my daughter has her own place and my son lives in DC, my daughter does the tree thing and I visit her for the holidays!
