New home sales vs. resale

One of my relatives will be licensed in December and is considering starting in new home sales instead of the resale market. Is there anyone who is a former new home sales agent who can shed some light on the pros and cons of the new home sales agent position? Are new home sales agents typically paid a percentage of the sale or are they paid a flat fee?
