Okay, so after a really enjoyable Listing Appointment earlier in the morning, my oldest son, Ben, and his buddy, Josh, finally talked me into taking the boat out today for some late season Crabbing.

We only live about 10 minutes from the public boat launch at Miami Beach on Hood Canal WA, and one of the prime Crabbing spots in the Puget Sound.

Call me a 'Wimp' or a 'Wussie' or whatever non-hacker term you wish, but I'm the first one to admit that I'm a 'Fair Weather' Crabber.

Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE the playful pursuit of pulling up these 'snap-happy' bottom-dwelling crustaceans. There are fewer things on the planet better tasting that freshly caught, cooked, and cracked Dungeness Crab!

But taking my boat out onto Hood Canal when its SNOWING, well, there's just something wrong with THAT picture! I don't care how much you like eating crab!!!

Granted, it's not as life-threatening and perilous as pulling up Alaskan King Crabs in the Bering Sea on Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch." But in both instances, I'd rather just observe from the cozy comforts of my recliner, nestled up to a blazing fire, remote in hand.

However, even though certain unmentionable parts of my body were severely frozen, our bountiful catch of 15 was well worth the trip!

Maybe I should run out to Sportsman's Warehouse in Silverdale WA and pick up some electric socks?

Rich, how much fun! I love crab and I love the show "Deadliest Catch". This Kitsap County we live in is pretty amazing!

Rich,

Those crabs sounds like they were worth it, that temp would have kept me inside by the fire! :)

I grew up in Kansas where seafood was Chicken of the Sea.  As an adult, I've gotten to love real seafood, and Dungeness Crab has got to be the best!  When I visit my brother on Bainbridge Island, eating your local crab, oysters and salmon is a treat that makes it hard to fly home!   But in the snow?  Brrrrr...

I think it is well worth the suffering but there must be some polar icecap sort of apparel you could wear!  I know when we take our boat out in the winter I wear complete ski-type clothing.  I think this is why so many like my friends who have homes on Orcas Island only live there in the summer!

Well, you know that I think the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab has more flavor.  But, no matter, delectable is delectable no matter what the name.

You just made my mouth water.

Rich,

Lenn beat me to it...Maryland blue points are awesome, but I'd 'settle' for dungeness!!! Thanks,   Fran

Rich, Look out buddy, with Christmas and a birthday coming up, you may find a bunch of electric socks coming your way from AR buddies :)

Rich, Great blog...those crabs looked delectable and I can't even eat them!...I'm allergic. I live on the coast of North Carolina in a little town called Southport. Blue crabs are plentiful here and a local favorite. I make up for not being able to eat crabs and shrimp.....with fresh fish year-round and oysters in the "R" months. I think my favorite seafood dish to make is clam chowder...cooked on an outdoor burner, sitting around a fire. Maybe this weekend!

Rich - I will eat Dungeness crab every day of the week. I don't waste time with that east coast crap. I thought crabbing season was over? Are you still allowed to crab with rings, or are pots still allowed this late?

Snow at the Hood Canal.  Global warming???  I think not.   When's dinner Rich?  I'd love some of that crab. :)

There's only one kind of crab to eat and that's Dungeness. Maybe Blue (and soft) are acquired taste, but I'm not willing to waste my time! I get to go to the Crab Pot for my birthday dinner next month. I'm drooling already!

I was really feeling crabby tonight and I signed on to Active Rain, started opening my subscriptions and what do I see.  Now I'm hungry and crabby.

Ryan - recreational crabbing in Hood Canal is open until January 3rd. What zone are you guys in?

I to have watched that show and really like it. I am not that big of a crab eater but I like my recliner also.

Rich,  As a navy wife, I've lived all over the country and Dungeness is the best!  When I was a teenager, I waded out with friends at our former family home on Camano Island, waist deep in freakin' cold water in the Utsalady Bay, picking the crabs off the bottom. But, I can say that I have never been out crabbing in a boat.  I know, crazy right?  Tell you what, I'll buy the socks if you'll share one or two of those 15 crabs....  How about hand warmers?  I'm negotiating here.

11/30/2007 04:13 AM by Marlene Scheffer, Realtor to Kitsap County, WA (Realty Station)

Rich - Good to know. I am not sure what zone we are in. I don't have a boat or a great deal of knowledge about the season opening. BUT, I do know some great locations in Bellingham and Blaine to score fresh crab if it is in season.

11/30/2007 05:45 PM by Ryan Martin - Bellingham Real Estate Agent (Windermere Real Estate / Whatcom Inc.)

Marlene - Let me know the next time you can show for Thursday coffee, and I'll bring a couple along for you!

Rick, you must be getting the snow while we steal your sun.  It's been sunny and above freezing for a couple weeks now.  No snow on the ground at my house...what's the deal?

I'm not a fan of crab, but I would love to catch some anyway.  It 's the getting out on the water that's the fun part.

11/30/2007 09:51 PM by Marty Van Diest, Your Alaskan Realtor (RE/MAX of Wasilla)

Marty! Howdy there, Stranger! Yeah, what's up with that???...Send some of that Sun down here, okay? And you're right, just getting out on the water is half the fun of crabbin. Just something about being near water is so calming and therapeutic. Thanks for stoppin by!

Rich ~  So good to see that you are well.  I have not seen you for a bit!  Okay, so a few things...

  • I love, love, love the Santa hat!  It suits you!
  • I enjoy crab quite a lot.  Anytime you want me to come visit, I will only request crab dinner.
  • I want the snow.  They say we may get some tonight.  But they always enjoy getting our hopes up just to crash them down with the reality of plain, old, boring rain!

Rich,

Wow, you've made my mouth water! I need to go find a good restaurant tomorrow.. That is to say one that serves crab....  All "good" and "great" restaurants serve crab, right?
