Paris911 movie
While exchanging our old Supra keys for new ones, I was standing in line at the final station and asked the man that was programming my key the following question.  "Are you or do you know anyone that is thinking about selling or buying any Real estate?"  He paused, the two agents I was in between thought I was completely off of my rocker.  I mean the room is filled with agents. Over 200.

This is after I yelled to the entire group as they were at the first station, "may I have your attention, there is a Mercedes in the parking lot that has their lights on..."  While I thought this was funny.  The crowds reaction proved it was not.  That whole, so quiet you could hear a pin drop, thing came into play.  ( I supposed a Repossession tow truck would have had a better reaction!!!)

This man had seen at least 50 before me.  Surely someone had asked that question.  He told me actually I have.  He also asked me "he asked me" for my card (I'm glad he did, I was still a bit taken back by his saying yes) and told me he was going to be ready after the first of the year.

Smoke them if you got them.  I suppose Real Estate is not for the shy?

Lesson - You never know and won't unless you ask!!!  You can only be killed once.  A scared man dies a thousand deaths, but a brave man but once!!!(that last one was not mine)  Neither is "3 men can keep a secret if two are dead"(that is the result of lots and lots of Police Training and my exposure to various folks from a really bad element!!)

I will add to the better side.  You also need to listen when they are telling you what they want.  It works both ways.

Connor,

That guy had it down. Never be afraid to ask for business.

Hope you have your best year ever in 2008

Sincerely

Connor, that's a great story. Show up and ask the question...you can't win if you don't play.

Great story! Tis true about a brave v/s coward person. Have a great rest of the year and fantastic 2008.

Wow, great story!  It proves it never hurts to ask!  Actually, my husband is in sales (non real estate) and when he interviews for a position he has to ask every person for the job.  This is standard and they all expect it.  He's been told if he can't ask for the job he can't ask for the sale.  Very true.

Conner, I love the dichotomy of your past as a policeman and the salutation of "Hugs"!. Nice story, good post and thanks for starting my with a smile. It a good lesson for me. I need to ask for the business constantly. I talk to my past and present clients all the time. I need to ask more. Good post!

Connor,

It amazes me what people DON'T do.  Its so simple to just ask the question.... to anyone!  So simple to just have business cards on you and hand them out.

11/29/2007 08:28 AM by Martin Abeshaus (ZIPVO)

Good luck, hope you get the business, keep on asking, I'm sure you will

Connor, great story. I wouldn't have *thought* to do that. How obviously smart of you.

Always ask for what you want.  By the way, you aren't originally from New York, are you?

I love the "Who Do You Know" game and play it every day.  Let us know when the sale goes thru!

How would you know if you don't ask? My wife use to gig me about always talking business and introducing myself to strangers...until I did it in the grocery store one day and the person started asking me the difference between a VUL and a VA, and then we talked for 10 minutes about IRA's and I set up an appointment for the next morning and we did a VUL, and 2 Roth IRA's and refinanced the house to consolidate home, car, truck payments and lowered the rate from 6.890 to 5.875.....I still get hugs everytime I see them at the store....

Paris911--interesting angle.  Maybe you need a disclaimer on your site--if this is a real emergency, please dial 911.  I just called a church a couple days ago, and got voice mail.  The first announcement was "if this is a life threatening emergency, please dial 911".  I wondered how many people call their priest when they get shot?

I liked your site and marketing angle, but have one small complaint.  Whats with the Kawasaki?

I'm sure that you were envied by every other agent there!  Good for you!

That is an inspiring story. One that will put it more at the front of my mind to keep asking for business if presented an opportunity. Thanks!

Wow! I am sure that everybody else in the room wished that they had the guts that you did! I agree that sometime you have to step outside of your comfort zone- and believe that you are the best. Good for you!

This is why Realtors need to tell everyone what they do. The more people you talk with, the more leads you will get. This isn't a business for the shy and timid. Great post!

True Story:

Stacking groceries on the conveyor belt at the market.  Cashier looks at me and says, "Shopping light today?"  (She always kids around with me.)

"Not by choice.  But until you send me a couple folks to buy houses my budget is shot."

"Oh yeah - call my sister.  She just got preapproved.  And my folks are wanting to move to a condo."

Presto!  2 buyers and a listing.  Just by breaking the ice.

(And being a smart a** helps at times, too!)

This is great - good for you for asking - I am sure I would not have, but  I would have laughed at your mercedes joke  Congrats to you!

I find you can be quiet and still get the business.  I'm not a loud talker but I am social.    It takes confidence and comfort in your own skin to ask for the business.   Good for you and thanks for reminding all of us!

Good story! I know I need to ask that question more often! I like the lights on comment! Sounds like something I would of said.

Connor - greeeeaaaaat post and congratulations!  Here's where I think lot's of folks miss the boat - many of us have preconceived notions of what a 'buyer' looks like.  You obviously either do not or suspended your's for a moment or two - keep it up and thanks for posting this - it's a great reminder to me too!

What a great anecdote.  The market is bad only if you think it is.

I have to go and stand in line tomorrow in Woodland Hills for my Supra Key exchange, I'll have to try your line, not the one about the Mercedes the other.  ;-)

great post.  Sometimes it's the most obvious of places that you would forget to ask our everyday question!

11/29/2007 07:19 PM by Paula Smith-St George Utah Real Estate (Unisun Realty St. George)

Like you said, If you don't ask, you won't know. All they can say is "NO", BUT.....They could say "YES"!

Great job. We just assume sometimes that someone else MAY have asked and you know what they say about assuming!!

Hope the leads pan out for you.

Agents can vary from very shy to standoffish to loud in the crowd (you and me I guess!)

Once I was sitting at a table with a handful of agents (probably 4 or 5) and the only NON AGENT was talking about buying and selling.  I was sitting there waiting for someone to say something as she was their friend "first" and I wanted to respect that.  Finally I said "Do you have a Realtor" and the answer was "NO!" to my amazement.  All the other Realtors just sat there with a "DOH" face.

Same thing happend to me when I was exchanging my supra key.  I sat down and was going through the process and chatted with the person.  Of course we started talking real estate and I was amazed in two days times none asked a question about her.  She tool my card.

Kathy, your right...they could say no...but any of us that have been married for years has heard that before...so what is the big deal....you never know if you don't ask!
