Social Media and a Cautionary Tale

We all use it... Facebook, Twitter, Linked-in, Google+ and now Pinterest.  Most everyone uses some form of Social Media.  It is how we communicate in the 21st Century.

But just how far have we come from when our ancestors drew paintings on cave cave menwalls to depict animals and other scenes to Pinterest where we “Pin” objects we like on Boards.

And just as those pesky cave paintings are still around for us to examine, our Tweets, posts and other messages we put in cyberspace will linger for others to read.

We... the current incarnation of cave men... do have the benefit of history to know that once we press that “SEND” button.. it is out there and we’d better be prepared to own what we’ve written... own it and be responsible for the consequences.

I was speaking with a friend today who relayed to me this sad story......

She and her fiance learned of his son’s death from a drug overdose

while they were on Facebook.

It seems that word of the young man’s death spread as his friends got on Facebook before his mother could contact the boy's father.  Imagine learning of your child’s death not from a family member but from the Internet.

Last year when my friend’s house burned his sister learned of it after her niece posted it on Facebook right after the fire.

Don’t misunderstand..... I love all of the social media. But with 24 hour news and text alerts, we’re all becoming spring loaded to shout it out to the world often before we take a breath to think about the consequences of our message.

Please just take some time to think

before you press “SEND”.

Spead of thought connectivity. Everything is moving faster as the blue and green marble speed increases several RPM's. Find something to hang on to and good luck making a mob responsible. The way it is is the way it is.

BARFF that's one of the things I dislike the most about social media.................information can spread to quickly by someone who shouldn't be spreading the info.

Good morning Kathy,

Unfortunately Roger is right..information can spread too quickly by someone who shouldn't be spreading the information. Your words of wisdom need to be taken....think before hitting the send button!

Good morning Kathy,

You are so right.  This is actually the second post I read this morning with this similar content.  We really need to be careful about hitting that send button.

Kathy, I don't think many young people actually understand the power of social media - they also do not get the importance of interpersonal face to face communication - a bad gap which makes for these kinds of stories.  Thank you for reminding us to  Think, before we share.

Good post, Kathy. I see remarks, even on here, that are so unprofessional it makes me cringe. Be mindful of your online integrity.

Andrew- oh yes... the sociology of the mob.

BARFF- I agree.  It's out there so it's just too easy to press send.

Dorie- I love the Herm Edwards speech to rookie NFL players urging them to "don't press send"

Cindy- yes, I think I read an excellent one by Barbara Hensley.

Erv- interesting idea.  We could elect to "receive" or not!

Joanna- I'm sure we've all put something out there that wasn't necessarily harmful but perhaps wish we had waited.

Kim- one of the first lessons to learn here or other social media is comments too are read by others and out there!

Jeanne and Ralph- what is it.. open mouth....insert foot!

John- You're so sweet!  I couldn't believe it when my friend told me the story yesterday.  I just cannot imagine what he must have felt.

I don't understand why people post some of the things they post on Facebook.  Unless your pet died, posting about deaths as soon as you hear about them, is definitely insensitive at best.

My mother posted on facebook that my daughter was pregnant before my daughter chose to do it herself.  Big lesson learned for Nana that day.  I think she gets it now, but there was some painful emotion resulting from her actions.

Kathy, I'm pretty good about thinking before pressing. Who in the world wants to learn of a disaster on Facebook. People really need to learn to be more sensitive.

Chris Ann- I discovered that my husband's nephew and his wife were pregnant via Facebook but I just can't imagine finding out about a child's death on Facebook.  Thanks for the group feature.

Craig- some things just get ahead of us...and this is one of them.

Sharon- Oh no.... I can only imagine.  Hope they're forgiving Nana.

Connie- that and security are to me the biggest problems with social media.

Hi Kathy--I think some of Whitney Houston's relatives learned of her death from the TV.  Imagine the shock of that.  The word spreads like wildfire and I'm sure that people think they are being helpful but fail to understand the family's feelings.  But that is one of the primary issues with social media, isn't it.
