Feng Shui Tip #1 Sharing - Crown Molding

Don't get me wrong...I am about as far from being an expert in feng shui as the next person, but I have a tendency to apply what I learn and then I want share it with everyone...so if you are interested, I will be posting some of the easy to remember feng shui tips that are helping me with my Feng Shui Journal series. I figure in about 30 years I may actually get the hang of it but right now I am working on developing my feng shui eyes and sharing helps me hang onto it.

For Feng Shui Eyes: Crown molding brings the eye up high, which raises everyone's Chi. It also enhances your reputation and leaves everyone feeling better, especially if you have lots of molding in the room found in your fame sector. *** Below is the Ba gua and you need to place it over the floor plan of your home with your front door at the bottom of the Ba gua...stretch it out to fit. The Fame Sector is the red square. In my home it is the kitchen so adding crown molding to the top of my cabinets would be the thing to do.

So this is why crown molding is so desirable, it makes people feel better! Who knew? We knew but did we know why? Not really.

Adding crown molding will add drama to any room and increase the perceived value of any home.

Look at these photo's (selected at random from Google Images) and pay close attention to where your eyes are drawn first and then imagine how it would feel to be standing in that room. (I know the photo's are small but give it a try anyway...) Do those rooms make you feel better just by looking at them? They do me!

Do you remember in school the classmates that used to outline all their coloring book pictures before they started coloring them in? Were you one of those kids? I was. They always looked better than everyone else's. That is what crown molding does for a room, it not only frames a room and points out its' assets but it brings our eyes up and makes us feel better...raising our Chi.

This Old House has the best do it yourself instructions for installing crown molding. (Now you can tell your clients crown molding increases good Chi)

Sheron ! Thank you for sharing . I know nothing about feng-shui but I agree about the molding, it doesnt need to be crown but a frame in lighter color works, I did outline my coloring book pictures...LOL

I didnt even know I had a CHI, but Ill find it !

Sheron ~ I agree - I always think a room looks much better with crown molding, and I guess that this is why! And yes, I was one of those who outlined the picture too!

I wonder how many of us outlined our pictures as kids...hmmm. Do let us know in your comments. This may have to be taken up in "The Secret"!

Fernando - oh you have a Chi alright and you use it very well. As far as other trims and moldings, I like to use quarter round in bathrooms just to clean up the paint lines but now...well, now its all about Chi. (Chi = energy)

Kathy - It is fun to know why some things work and others don't. Feng shui may be hiding many of the answers :)

Sheron - another coloring "framer" here.  I love crown moulding, but with some of the low ceilings around here (7 feet and less) I feel like it actually makes the ceiling close in on the rooms - maybe it's the moulding the builders are using?

I'm another "outliner"...hmmm, very interesting. I do feel like molding finishes off a room, even if it is not very wide. I'm going to a class next week called "Harnessing the Energy of Emotion to Buy and Sell Real Estate". It promises to teach a basic understanding of Feng Shui for real estate. Even though I'm a stager, and not an agent, I try to learn as much as I can about the energies homes have.

Thanks, Sheron!!!

Here I am Sheron, another coloring book outliner!  Maybe that is the indicator of a stager in progress?  I love crown moldings in homes but here in FL most homes have vaulted ceilings and you can't install crown molding.  However, if lifting the eye up, also lifts the Chi, then I would assume vaulted ceilings do the same, eh? (see how good I speak Canadian?  Betty taught me, eh?  And she also taught me what a touk is.  She and Margo are going to sponsor me so I can move to Canada and live in a democracy once again :-)

Sheron - are you sure about the Elements in each of the boxes? That's not how I remember them - but then my memory may be off ...

Sheron ~ Very interesting and enlightening post! I've always loved using crown molding but didn't know it's relationship to chi.  Now I can sound like a pro when I recommend it to clients!  Thanks for the ba gua map too.

Hmmmm....crown molding ....sort of like wearing a hat, I guess. Maybe not.

11/29/2007 07:38 PM by James Frazier (A Defined Design)

What? More outliners! This is getting freaky.

Jackie - 7' ceilings? Just a note, to make ceilings look higher, place a wainscot 2/3 up the wall with a color break or batten board. The ceiling disappears.

Elaine - Be sure to share the high points with us. The longer you are in this business, the less you will know so keep taking classes.

Terry - you too? Vaulted ceilings should work the same or better...eh?

Sharon - All the Ba gua's say the same thing but that doesn't mean there are other patterns and strategies used. I understand the 9 sector Ba gua.

Maureen - exactly!

James - did you outline? You could say a hat draws the eyes to it first too...

Thank you and that is why I love crown moulding.  I get all my trim from www.themouldingcompany.com and I will pass on what I learned here today!

Sheron - Yes, can you even believe it?  7 feet plus a few inches (less than 5) floor to ceiling on several  properties - the good news is it helps to keep heating costs lower.  Thanks for the idea on the wainscoting - I'd read about that, but had been hesitant to try it as it doesn't seem to look very modern - then again 7 foot ceilings don't either, LOL!

Jackie - 5'/3' is the usual break for an 8' ceiling so for a 7' ceiling, a good place to break would be 4 to 4 1/2 feet up the wall. I wonder what feng shui would say...when I run across that point I will publish it. Thanks

ohmygosh Sheron, I just love crown molding.  I wish it was more "Arizona friendly"

ohmygosh Nancy - I just love Tucson! I love the texture there and the quaint adobe homes with rock yards.

Hi Sheron,

Jackie brought up a great point about the 7' or lower ceilings. Not sure I want people to notice a low ceiling.

Sheron is there any type of contemporary mouldings that can be used out there? With all the stainless steel kitchens appliances I am waiting to see if the old tin/copper ceilings come back as maybe stainless steel ceilings or crown mouldings? But maybe this would be too expensive.

12/24/2007 03:24 AM by Ray Essick (Coleman Realty Group)

Hello SHERON!!  I LOVE crown molding...and install it in every home I renovate...vaulted ceilings too!  Unless it is a log cabin, I will be inclined to add this classic touch on every house.  When it is installed nicely, it seems that you could not imagine the room being dressed without it!

Your Feng Shui tips are always interesting to read and I feel that if people understand the natural flow of things...and PAY ATTENTION to their surroundings, it can more easily explain why they feel more comfortable or happy in a particular space!

Enjoy your Holidays Girlfriend!!  Warm Regards-Kathleen G

Ray - contemporary style as you probably know, does not use trim to achieve a look. There are many ways to raise Chi with color like red, with floor plants or up lights, art, etc.

Kathleen - nice to hear from you. We will have to get caught up after the holiday's!

Sheron,

Great post. I throw a little Feng Shui into the the mix too. For mid-centuries I've created mock tray ceilings with strips of wood attached to the perimeter of the ceiling.

Susan - that sounds really creative...have any pictures?

I love crown molding and have added "value" by using it.  Now, if only I could learn to cut it I could save lots of $$$$

01/12/2008 05:58 PM by The Best Spot Realty/Norris Lake Real Estate/Ooltewah Real E

Gayle - I know what you mean! I know you have to cut it the opposite of how you think it should be cut...4 our of 5 times I will cut a molding wrong. Thanks for stopping by and I appreciate your comments...I like your pooch too!

Bob and Carolin (which?), remember the song 'Whistle while you work"? They say you cannot be sad while you are whistling or smiling and now we can add 'while looking up'! Glad you stopped by!!!

Great observation, about the Chi, I never thought of that.

I outlined, too. And, thanks for sharing the journal.

Apparently I need it in my breakfast room (how's that going to work with the nearby kitchen cabs?)  & master suite (I was planning on doing that one if I can ever pick out a paint color first!).  I personally love crown and have even been trying to figure out if it would be silly in my guest and master bathrooms.... We just added dental crown to the formal dining room a few months ago....

01/14/2008 02:52 PM by Melissa Marro www.StagingAndRedesign.com www.RedesigningCharleston.com (First Impressions)

Marzena - I am beginning to believe there is something to this outlining thing. Love your name!

Melissa - will you kitchen cabinets allow for the molding at the top?

Crown molding is the best thing we have ever done to our house. We live in Orange County and in the recent years have bought and sold 4 homes finally settling on our current home. It was hard finding a local contractor but a frend referred us to these guys http://www.drayconstruction.com they did an excellent job for us and we used them on 3 of the 4 houses

I hear the happy chi in your voice Leslie and now we know some part of the reason!
