Hudson Valley NY Barns

Barns have always fascinated me.  Even the ones in poor condition prove to be good photograhic subjects.

Over the years I have noticed that many of my clients have a barn on their wish list for their country home -  Some, because coming to the country is an opportunity for downtime and likely the chance to pursue hobbies such as painting or sculpting - Others want the barn to house their horses so that whenever possible they can enjoy some horseback riding.

I have several friends who also enjoy taking pictures of barns and one who paints the barns from these photographs.

Because this area was once a prime agricultural area you will find many types of barns.  These barns are used for many purposes.

Some of the usages for barns in the Hudson Valley are:

  • Conversion to a bed and breakfast,
  • Artist Studio
  • Dance Studio
  • Dairy
  • Music Studio
  • Winery
  • Store
  • Hay Loft
  • Classic Car Storage
  • Home Office
  • Living space

Sit back and enjoy the tour!

Jennifer, even though I live very close to our downtown area, it is amazing how many barns are around me.  Most of them are used as barns, but I am starting to notice some of the other uses for them that you wrote about.

Jennifer,
Great photos.  It is good to see so many being restored and used, unfortunately many beautiful barns have been destroyed.  There were some beautiful old log tobacco barns on my great grandparents farm that have been torn down.  What a shame and loss of history.

It's refreshing to know some owners decide to keep the barns and convert them for different use.

Jennifer, I am fascinated by them too. I think there is something about them that screams Americana and reminds us of a time when life was simpler and hard work was core. It is good to seem them still being put to good use.

Jennifer, we have barns here too.  I just love to see barns because it always seems like they are postcard-like scenes.  Those are fabulous pictures... looks like Alabama!

Jennifer, I LOVE your pictures!  For some reason I am facinated with Barns, I only remember ONE here on Long Island when I was growing up which is long gone.  My daughter would be thrilled with a home and a small barn for her own "art studio."  Great shots, thank you.

Jennifer - brings back memories. Your building photos (barn photos) would be a great addition to the Architecture, Buildings and Dings group - will you post your post there as well?

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for reminding me that such things exist!   Here in Hawaii, there just aren't hardly any at all.  In fact, I can't think of even one!   Bummers!   Enjoy your day -- and the barns around you.   Jerry

Jennifer...thanks for sharing these photos.  They are great.  We have some barns out my way also.  I love them and have taken photos of them also.  Unfortunately we are losing some from disrepair, especially when we get some ice or snow storms.

Cheers, Kathleen

George - There are so many uses for barns especially because of the available space.

Cynthia - So many have regretted tearing down old buildings instead of restoring them.

Derrick - I think preservation is the way to go.

Steven - I know exactly what you mean.  And as  can be seen from the picture with some imagination there are many possibilities.

Carol -Glad you appreciate the the picture.  Send your daughter this way and I could probably get her a barn.

Sharon - I am glad this brought back memories for you.  It was my pleasure to post this to the group.  Thank you for asking.

Jerry - Glad you enjoyed the shots.   On a Tropical island I wouldn't expect to see many or even any.

JaneAnne - I am glad the post accomplished my mission, this was intended to be a happy visual post.

Kathleen - Glad you enjoyed the shots.  I have seen some barns in bad shaped get restored, I hope that can happen in your area

Jennifer, Guess the shots just reminded me that there are things one doesn't think of over here, but when one does, it's not hard to get a little homesick.  When that happens, I simply go to a beach!   Take a look at this!  Jerry

Jennifer,

Thanks for sharing your photos.  I am surprised that you were able to find so many barns in Dutchess County.   I remember when this was truly farm country...saddens me a little to see that there are very few farms left.

Jennifer,

you have a lovely collection of the barns...  I love the barn pictures.  Mostly they are the only building within their surrounding and they make amazing and dramatic pictures, especially around the sunset and/or sunrise...

Jennifer - Great photos - thanks for sharing them with the group.

Barns, like lofts, aren't for everyone as a place to live, but everyone seems to enjoy seeing them.
