Most of us buy plants to landscape our homes; decorate with house plants inside our house or office and take walks/hikes with our children and pets.
Warning! Real Estate agents need to be aware of any red flags at their listings/buyers perspective homes as well.
Many plants or trees can cause sickness or death to children, pets, wildlife, farm animals and also to adults. It is important to rid our homes of poisonous plants and teach our children and pets not to taste or eat any plants. Also the berries can be very tempting and we should not taste them. Mushrooms are also risky and can be a fast and painful death if you choose the wrong species.
I found this great website to help the untrained person to find out about plants and trees. The University of Pennsylvania has an extensive website on Poisonous Plants and they list them by the common names we are all familiar with. I went through and found some real surprises here:
Avocado, Azalea, Clover, Creeping Charlie, Ground Ivy, Iris, Lily, “Marijuana”, Oleander, Philodendron, Poinsettia, Wisteria plus many more. The site also mentions wildflowers, seeds and berries.
When my daughter graduated from college, we had taken one of her leis and cut it up into three pieces and made individual leis for our dogs for a Kodak moment. While I ran in the house for about 1 minute, I came back out and found one of the dogs was eating the orchids off the lei around her neck. Luckily they are not poisonous or my dog would not be here today.
Things to Do:
Call the Poison Hotline at 1-800-222-1222
Rush the person to the Emergency Ward.
*One excellent tip I found was to bring a sample of the leaf, berry or seed with you to the hospital. I do not think I would have thought of this. Hopefully this never happens but if it does, it is better to be prepared.
At Christmas time, remember if someone brings you a beautiful poinsettia that you keep it up from your pets and children. Who would have known this lovely and popular plant would be so lethal?
