Do You Have Poisonous Plants at your Home or Listing?

 I had heard that Oleander was poisonous as I remember it used to be in everyone's yards and great freeway and median plants since it was pretty and grew big. But my mother told me it was poisonous and she had them all removed in the backyard of her home since she had two dogs. There was 4 or 5 shrubs approx 10ft tall so they were chopped and removed completely. She said the gardener got sick and dizzy from cutting them down and she felt so bad. I guess he should of been wearing a mask. Luckily he didn't have to go to the hospital. Of course this was in the 70's so we didn't know as much as we know now. I think the internet has really educated us about everything.

I was surprised about some of the plants on the list. I will continue to check the website at Univ of Penn before buying new plants for my yard.

 I didn't either......I was really amazed at what I saw on the list and there are hundreds on the web site I mentioned. Some of these are common plants we buy in the grocery and home improvement stores??? Just so surprised. Thanks for stopping.

 I have palm trees in my backyard and the dates fall off. No matter how much we try to cut the sacs off and rake the dates, the dogs still find them and chew on them but leave the pit. I used to be scared that they would die but after 2 years of collecting them, chewing on them and sneaking them in the house, I have decided I have to let it go. I still yell and say NO but they collect them and put them in piles on the rug they like to lay on. They are so funny.

 I agree allergies can affect some people and pets and not others just like peanuts and shellfish. It is sometimes just so scary. Children learn to not touch plants and flowers as they get older but pets can never be trusted totally. My terrier used to eat flowers but now she just likes to smell them. The list at the Univ of Penn website has about 200 common plants that could be lethal to many.

I agree with you and when you are showing or selling foreclosed properties you never know what is growing in the yard. Did you notice the marijuana on my list. I laughed when I saw it and I can see how lethal it could be for children and animals. Once I thought I found Marijuana but code enforcement said it was just a pointy weed. I think it had six leaves and pot has 5. I had it dug up anyway just in case.

Yes, it is important to make sure we do not have these plants but there were so many so I am going to start looking at the list and finding the pictures. I read where one red maple leaf could kill a cow in 20 minutes. That was scary. And one seed could kill farm animals and humans in less than an hour. People need to not put things in their mouth. I have been on hikes with others and they will stick a flower in their mouth to determine what it is. I just think about Euell Gibbons and he was an expert until he ate the wrong thing.
