I noticed over the Thanksgiving holidays that I had jumped a few spots.  After searching, and searching, I found that I did not receive any points due to:

  • Referrals becoming active - Update your profile at least!
  • Articles being featured - Nope, apparently only articles that regurgitate information get featured or articles in the "good ol' boy (or gal) network." - (Yes, I drink hatorade)
  • People commenting on my posts

Nope, none of those.  It was simply people trying to repositions themselves.  Some are moving to the metro Area, I am assuming that although their "rank" is lower, the exposure is greater.  In other cases, people moved to areas with no competition - to be the featured person there.  In one such case, a very notable blogger, moved to a completely non-existent area.

So now I'm #4 for my county on AR.   WOOT.

I'm still baffled by the strategy, which is more effective?  Being near the top in a large metro area like Atlanta, or being the #1 person on a small town city.  Since each are sort of exclusive.  Do you want to be known as the top agent in your town, or is this just an SEO tactic to get in the most leads?

Since I have been a mere #3 since spring for Las Vegas, I haven't a clue what #1 or #2 means at all!  I have been happy with the results from SEO to leads so if it brings more leads to be in a top spot then, WOW!  I could move on to Henderson and be featured.  Technically I am physically closer to Henderson than Las Vegas but my physical address is Las Vegas (even though I live in a township in unincorporated Clark County) and be #1.  I tried that for about a month and I didn't get any extra leads or such!

Hatorade is FUNNY!  Don't worry about featured, just start syndicating and  when you hit a major publication that will be your own personal featured.

Congrats on #4!

I don't think placement within a small town or large area has much to do with anything other then ego.  Just pace yourself and continue writing and at some point you'll rise to the top.  Most people fade away once they realize this is work.

Renee is right Joshua, hatorade is funny.  I wouldn't concern yourself all that much with the Featured stuff....as long as you write quality stuff for Consumers and/or Real Estate Professionals, the more people will notice and the more likely that pretty little star will find you.  As far as the rankings, I'm not sure.  Take advantage of the Google Juice Active-Rain brings to the table and run with it.  The rest, I'm sure, will follow.

Josh, The only way to build up your points and attain a higher level is by having fun, making new friends who you regularly support, and writing good content that people want to read. In other words, you get what you give.

I don't believe there is any  'good ole boy/gal' network picking featured posts...it is dependent on how appealing and useful your blogs are.

have a good one, weekend that is

JJ, You`re doing it right! I wouldn`t worry about the "Featured" posts. There is no ryhme or reason why some get featured more than others.

This can be like playing CHESS if you're just in it for points and ranking!  Very interesting...

Josh-to me points aren't as important as I used to think...its the readership you develop.  I am with you...featured is great BUT are you building business, your network and referral base?  Are you representing your area?  For me...I just do what I do because I love it...and if it happens to get me featured great...if not its ok too!  My search engine placement, my friendships and referrals are more important to me!

As far as moving areas...not sure what it does...and honestly...I am going to stay put...I'm too busy to be playing those kind of games!

Josh, Oh! My!  God!  I remember having the exact same thoughts.  What does it take to get a freakin' gold star around here!    I clicked on your blog after you commented on one of my posts and as soon as I said it hoped you were a raw newbie.  Too bad you've bee3n around a bit too long!  But I did subscribe to it and look forward to reading and commenting on your posts.

It took me at least 3-months to have a real network of blogging buddies and to figure out my voice and look.  Then, when itt finally started to happen, it was really, really fun!

Hang in!  You'll get there!  You can always move to DC where you'd already be the #2 featured blogger in the "state".

Renee Burrows - Las Vegas NV Real Estate - Leads what they are I just wonder if the featured person in a larger area gets more?!

Dan Cummings - Connecticut's Running Real Estate Agent - Ego and SEO.  Look at the top 2 on AR.  One of them doesn't even live close to the metro area at all, but he uses it to focus on the "BIG" picture as opposed to a specific city.  (He does have city specific sites though).

Jo-Anne Smith,B.Sc., Belleville/Quinte REALTOR® - If you don't think the same sort of people are picking the featured then you must not have been on AR very long.  It's the same people and the same articles.  I wrote this article almost as an experiment.  It's the same sort of AR "gushing" article that typically gets featured.

Scott Daniels - I agree wholeheartedly.

Midori Miller-Daytona Beach Florida Real Estate Training - I agree, local site might be much more useful in the long run. Points ARE useful especially if you do any "weird" searches on Google.  He who has the most points wins.

Patricia Kennedy - I can't afford to live in DC are you kidding me! LOL.  Maybe I should switch my blog over there and refer the leads to you! :D
