The new environmentally friendly expansion of the western FPL plant was passed with a unanimous approval.   Florida power and light new plant reclaimed water

The county commissioners approved FPL's request to use reclaimed waster water to cool the plant which has three huge generators that are powered by natural gas.

The new plant will be working by 2011 and is located near Loxahatchee west of Seminole Pratt Whitney Road and North of Southern Blvd.

An estimated 21 million gallons a day of treated sewage will be used to cool the generators. This is so much better than the previous plan of going into Florida's aquifers to get the water which would put a strain on our water supply.

The water utility company is going to borrow $75 Million dollars to install pipes that will carry the reclaimed water to the plant. The plant itself is going to cost $1.2 Billion to build. There will be increases in water rates for those who pay for county water.

There were some environmentalists who were against building the plant because of the pollution they say it will emit and that the plant is too close to the everglades.  There has not been a new plant built here since 1963. The supporters of the plant including some residents and many business owners say that the plant is being powered by natural gas, using reclaimed water and being able to use generators are all environmentally friendly compared to alternatives. It will have state of the are emissions control technologies. The plant will be able to turn gas into electricity to supply to 750,000 homes and businesses. Producing more megawatts means using less fuel and reducing emissions.

Some critics are saying the FPL should use solar since they just invested a ton of money in Solar energy production. See my post about FPL going into Solar Power.  Commissioner Mary McCarty said, " It's a win-win, and it's an environmentally friendly thing."

Katerina~

Fascinating to read about the various opinions about the updated/new power plant from a good distance and without too much emotion....I do wonder, in the end, do you think it will it negatively impact the Everglades?....

Katerina, by the way do you ever go by just "Kat"? I guess green is definitely IN when we see big business getting into it.

I guess the tree huggers are definitely against nuclear power then, is that right?

Katerina, I personally think the power companies should burn trash to make electricity. No more land fills.

BTW, I'm for more and bigger power plants. I like electricity. I use a lot of it.

janeAnne- I do not know the answer to that. The dilemma is and always has been, how do you balance people growth and protecting nature. I am sure there is a way. They are saying this will have little impact, but who do you believe? Time will only tell, then it may be too late if it is not a good alternative. Katerina

John- I am not a tree hugger and I am against nuclear power plants. We have one in a town up in Port St Lucie county, and at the closing table parents have to sign a disclosure saying they understand that the highest rates of brain cancer are right there near that plant. My mom did  a lot of research on it back in the 60's and discovered a lot of negatives to it.

Wind and sun are free, we should harness their power. It is viable and doable , but not a lot of profits yet to be made in it,. As soon as the profits show up, big companies will jump on that band wagon. Katerina

Bill- I think that is a great idea if we can find a way that carcinigens (spelled it wrong) are not released in the air. Land fills are horrible, they are trying to build a new one out west of us, we are all in an uproar about it.The smell is horrendous. My medical doctor told me that all his patients that have cancer live next to the land fill, it is a million dollar plus golf course community right next to the dump. He says out of every 2 patients that live there, 1 has cancer! Katerina

Dan- Only when there are large profits to be made do they get on the green thing! No, I hate the name of Kat! Absolutely abhor it! Katerina

Katerina,

That is a smart and forward-looking decision from FPL. The West is already struggling with serious water issues and similar problems are creeping up on that side of the continent, too. Georgia comes to mind. Good news.

Katerina, They can burn anything and then "scrub" the emissions and leave the resultant "air" very pure. They can also run the "air" through a greenhouse with "rain" inside and filled with plants that absorb the heavy metals and such. Lots of things they could be doing if they just wanted to.

Bill- I am so sure you are right, but as long as there is not enough money in it for the powers that be it will not happen! Greed of the few hurts many. I just think it is horrid how irresponsible companies can be when it comes to doing what is best for us and the planet. Respect God's earth is a simple request. Katerina
