How to choose the domain for your website.

Hi Fellas.

Well, there are some myths about the right domain name for a website. Some people think that the domain will be important for the search engines, therefore some people think that if they include the word homes or houses they will be found easily and some times they get a super long name for example www.BuyYourHomeEasyInFloridaWithJamesArias.com or they think that adding 3 or more domains will increase the possibilities of bringing more traffic.

The truth is that the domain is not so relevant for search engines because what search engines are looking for is the content on your site, when you have a lot of information about the related search, then search engines give more importance to your content.

Also, adding new content information to your site like Blogs, links and listings give more relevance for search engines because they see that you are working on this very often.

Now, what you want to do in order to have the right domain is.

  • Make it as short as possible
  • Make sure that is easy to remember
  • Think as a client and try to get a domain that is relevant for what your clients are looking for.

Now a really good tip so your clients can remember your domain is to capitalize the first letter on each word for example: www.MiamiHomes.com

I hope this Blog will be very helpful when it comes to choosing your domain name.

Best Regards.

Am I a 'fella'?? ;-)  (just kidding!)

Anyway....I've heard conflicting opinions about whether keywords in a URL matter or not.  Just wondering what you are basing your assessment on.  Thanks!

That was my mistake! My original intention was to name my company National Currency but it was taken so I threw the word "resources" at the end of the domain to make it work. Every time I give my email out to clients they get frustrated with the address

Hi Wendy,

I have read this on numerous reliable websites, such as SEOmoz.org. They actually recently did a study polling 50 different SEO experts. They listed what they thought were the most important factors and among the top was title tags, relevant content and inbound links. There is a theory that if you have a domain that is exactly the same as the search phrase used in google then it has some increased importance, but this not enough of a reason to choose a long tail keyword domain. Also there is another theory (non of this is proven because google does not make this information public..it is their secret sauce) that extremely long domains are looked at on the side of spam.

Bret,

I am glad to clear this up for you. Thanks for reading!

We were recently told that we should have 'realestate' or similar on the url - we don't but we did buy domain names that have realestate, realty etc in them. We are seeing a slight problem of people figuring out how to spell the name - since the it has the word "and" in it and it makes it a bit confusing for some - www.kennaandco.com. Thanks for the info. Appreciated.
