I have been asked this question a lot lately so I thought I would shed some light on the subject - briefly of course.

An interior designer is anyone who has a degree in interior design or has a minimum of 11 years in the field as an interior decorator. They are qualified to work with architects and contractors in manipulating blue prints, floor plans, electrical, plumbing, etc.

An interior decorator is anyone who decorates interiors. They are qualified to design and execute window coverings, furnishings, wall treatments, and all surfaces. They usually purchase wholesale and sell at retail or work in departments stores or for design firms.

A home stager is anyone who arranges or rearranges the interior/exterior of a residential property to present that property as a marketable product.

I had not really thought about the difference between interior designer and interior decorator until this post.  It makes sense even in the name.  Design meaning to arrange the space, decorate to add embellishments to an existing space.  Staging . . . well you'd have to be in theatre to derive that one from the name!  Thanks for the clarification.

I take that back. I was a member of the Iinternational Builders Association for years but I didn't consider that a group. I went to all the shows to keep up with new product lines when I was heavily involved with model home projects for developers.

Thanks for the explanation. I didnt quite know the difference between a designer vs. decorator designation.

Sheron,

I especially appreciate learning that there is a difference between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator.  Up until now, I just thought that the terms were just 'interchangeable'!

Thank you for educating me!

The one term that I am strugging with is "Redesign" or "move in" services.  Can anyone explain the difference and why someone would hire a Stager vs an Interior Decorator?

Alyse - Redesign is just that...rearranging what one has. I could be an update like I do for many of my long term clients...such as go in after 10 years and recover, replace, and rearrange a dated style, or as simple as moving things around and changing out the color scheme by adding new area rugs, window coverings, pillows and bedcoverings. But for the stager it appears to be another term for staging. It could also mean using similar techniqes as decluttering and staging a home that is not for sale. What stagers have learned is where the furniture goes and most people to not know how or where to place their furniture. They understand little about traffic flow or scale.

I don't know if anyone would hire a stager if they want decorating services but if the stager has talent and has staged someones home and the clients love what the stager has done to their "stuff", then that client will ask if the stager can arrange their furnishings and accessories in their new home. Gaining decorating skills will certainly be an advantage to any stager.

That is how I see it. Any other interpretations?
