Fear can paralyze you, or fear can motivate you.

My morning routine is pretty simple.  I get up, turn on the coffee, read Active Rain, scan the national news on TV, shower and head to the office or somewhere.  When I was scanning the news this morning I heard the exact same statement twice.  The commercials said, "You don't need to be afraid . . ."

That made me wonder.  Why would multiple commercials for different Fear can paralyze you, or fear can motivate you.products use that line?  Are we a nation that is becoming afraid?  Or, has the marketing industry seized upon an undercurrent of concern that is in our national psyche?  Politicians use fear to get your vote. One side swears the other side is going to take your Medicare, and the other side says the other guys are going to take more taxes.  "Vote for me and I will protect you!"  It's marketing, and in the political scene it's buffalo biscuits designed to control you.  It's fear.

Fear can be a great motivator.  This morning, I watched a surveillance video of a pharmacist pepper spray a robber.  The small female pharmacists took out the would-be robber and put him in the hospital because of the bear repellent pepper spray she used against him.  Good for her.  She should have banged him on the head in the process.

Fear can paralyze you, or fear can motivate you.  What you do with it will determine how it affects you.  It can make you cautious.  Or, it can make you bold.  Watch a mother when her child is in danger.  Suddenly, she has supernatural strength and courage.  She will go through fire to rescue her child in distress.

Fear can awaken your senses and make you alert, or it can make you make you cower and hide.  The commercial is correct.  You don't need to Fear can paralyze you, or fear can motivate you.be afraid, but you do need to assess the source of the fear and determine if it is something you are willing to confront.

Starting a new business might cause one type of fear.  Jumping off a bridge with a bungee cord attached to your ankle generates another type of fear.  When you have determined the source of the fear, you can determine your response.  You don't need to be afraid.

One of my biggest AHA moments came when I realized that SUCCESS can be a big fear.  When we recognize what's stopping us, it's so much easier to move forward.  Great post.

Absolutely, Tammy.  Thanks for the suggest!

Well said, Marcia.

You bet, Mimi.  There is actually a psychological phenomenon in women called, "Mode to avoid success."  It happens to some women who are striving for success.  Just before they reach the pentacle they do something to derail their success.  How wild is that?  It's probably motivated by fear.

I think some of the best steps I ever took in my life were when I took a deep breath and conquered one fear or another (fear of public speaking, of leaving a job that wasn't working, of moving to a new town).  I grew in leaps and bounds by just facing the fear of whatever.  Some people never leave the town they were raised in because they are afraid of what is "out there."  I find that so sad.

Nice post. Fear has kept me from doing a lot of things in my life, but I'm working on changing that. I think to get thru any fear, you have to have faith -- trust and know that all will be okay. Easier said than done, but once you get to that point, you realize nothing can get in your way.

Good Morning Mike, You can not succeed if you do not try. There is a difference between fear of trying and fear for safety. Safety should come first. Thanks for the great conversation on the subject

Love this post... Fear can paralyze, I think that's why God and the angels addressed the topic so many times in the Bible.  When I was going through a really bad time I clung to 2 Timothy 1:7.  Now I am bold most of the time... it has become a great motivator to me!  suggested it.

Excellent, Linda.  That's a great verse to cling on to.  I've used it myself.

Mike

I've often said that as a salesperson on commission, I operate on the FEAR -- fear of not having any clients, of not knowing enough, of not having the skills to serve my clients, of not having any money. In my case, fear is definitely a motivator. But couple that with JOY -- at truly enjoying what I'm doing, of feeling that I've truly helped clients, of knowing that this is profession that I am good at.

One of my favorite quotes: If it's to be, it's up to me.

Mike, I actually just had a similar conversation with some buyes the other day.  Wondering if it had always been true that politicians and commercials approached us with some solution for saving us from a fear THEY created...adding to those that Leslie listed...the fear of wrinkled skin or clothing that doesn't smell like forests or the fear of less than brilliant white teeth...who ya gonna trust?  Great post.

Thanks, Mona.  It was weird yesterday when I was scanning channels.  Two channels back to back had that comment "you don't need to be afraid" playing as I turned them on.  They were two completely different products.  Have a great weekend!

Great post Mike, I came here through Lisa's re-blog. I find that when I'm procrastinating about something it's usually because I'm a tad frightened of the outcome. Fear has many ways of manifesting itself.
