I blogged about this earlier this year but just wanted to make you aware of the December 31st deadline.

The deadline to apply for a Property Tax/Rent Rebate program offering rebates to qualified seniors and residents this year is December 31st. The income limit for homeowners has more than doubled for the year to $35,000, or $15,000 for renters. Applicants need only include half of their Social Security, Supplemental Security Income or federal Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits when calculating eligibility. The state estimates that 200,000 residents statewide are eligible for a rebate of up to $650 on property taxes and rent but have not yet applied. Residents can contact the Department of Revenue at (888) 789-3900.

I did a little looking into this myself.  The direct link for the program is

 http://www.revenue.state.pa.us/ptrr/site/default.asp

This seems to be a direct benefit from Pennsylvania opening up the state to gaming.  It is for claimants or spouses 65 years of age or older; widows or widowers 50 years of age or older; and the permanently disabled 18 years of age or older.   The income limits are pasted below.  There may be a calculation to derive income for qualifying where social security income is used.

Homeowners now receive:

IncomeMaximum Rebate
$0 to $8,000$650
$8,001 to $15,000$500
$15,001 to $18,000$300
$18,001 to $35,000$250
  Renters now receive:
IncomeMaximum Rebate
$0 to $8,000$650
$8,001 to $15,000$500

There is a calculator available at http://www.revenue.state.pa.us/ptrr/cwp/view.asp?a=3&q=263406&ptrrNav=| to show the approximate benefit.

The application and instruction book is available at http://www.revenue.state.pa.us/ptrr/cwp/browse.asp?a=352&bc=0&c=35460&ptrrNav=|

The deadline for this year, 2008 has been extended to the year's end so that no one misses out. There is an article from Reuters PA Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program extended.

Property Tax/Rent Rebate forms (PA-1000) are available online at
www.PaPropertyTaxRelief.com and by calling 1-888-222-9190.  Forms and
assistance also are available at Revenue district offices (listed in the blue
pages of local telephone directories), local Area Agencies on Aging, senior
centers and state legislators' offices.
