Anyone Can Have a Guard Dog. They are easy to find. They growl, they bark, they scratch at the door, and somehow they manage to scare away would-be prowlers.
However, most folks are not as lucky as I am. I have a Guard Cat !
Her name is Mollie. Mollie T. Cat. She can be found at most hours of the day... faithfully sitting on top of the piano... right in the middle of my front window... peering relentlessly out the window... guarding my home.
What does she do, you might ask ? Well... mostly... she just "sits there." But... if you dare to come any closer to halfway up the front walk... Mollie T. Cat can be very, very intimidating.
Here is a picture of my totally ferocious Guard Cat. Pretty scary, doncha think ? Children, neighbors, letter carriers, UPS delivery persons, Avon Ladies, Domino's Pizza delivery folks, gas and electric company meter readers... and more... absolutely "freeze in their tracks" when they get their first glimpse of Mollie T. Cat... resident Guard Cat.
You see... Mollie T. Cat has this incredibly ominous "hiss." She stands up... faces you... then arches her back with terrifying ferocity... and hisses. I mean... talk about scary.
Mollie has become a legend. Although I have yet to find them, I am told stories have been written, and songs have been composed and sung. I hear that Gordon Lightfoot wrote a song about Mollie T.... just after he wrote "The Wreck of The Edmond Fitzgerald" which, as I'm sure you remember, related the terrible sinking of that noble ship on Lake Erie.
Even though Mollie has been immortalized in both song and saga, she remains at her guard post... absolutely refusing to retire. Being the Brave Guard Cat that she is... our neighborhood remains safe... for adults and children alike... thanks to Mollie.
