California Fires......Do You Know What Your Homeowner's Insurance Provides?

Due to the recent fires,

I wanted to address coverage's provided by, homeowners, condo, and renters policies.***

Additional living expenses:

If you face a mandatory evacuation your property insurance coverage will cover your additional expenses for hotels, food, clothes etc up to the maximum amount of your policy limits.  If your property does not receive any damage you have this coverage for UP to two weeks.  If you have property damage you may receive this coverage for up to 1 year.  (With some companies your deductible may apply to this coverage also, if it does you should look elsewhere.)

Liability:

This provides coverage for you financially if you are ever held responsible for ones injury or property damage.  This will also cover your defense charges if it has to go to court.

Dwelling:

This is the coverage that rebuilds your structure.  You want to make sure that this is accurate.  In California the average cost per sq. ft is anywhere between $160-$200 per sq. ft.  Please contact me if you have questions on your area. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure this

coverage is updated.  I will help with annual reviews.

Contents:

Covers all your personal possesions that are not permanently attached to the structure.  We cover "replacement cost" not "actual cash value".  It is a good idea to make a list of items you have in the house and take pictures of high value items with model numbers or serial numbers if possible.  This is mostly for your benefit as it is extremely hard to remember what you have when it's all gone.

***If your property insurance is not with Allstate please verify your coverage with your carrier.

I also wanted to share a comment made by one of my very good clients affected by the recent fires here in Orange county.  She said, "Pretty much the general feeling of the canyon folks is that Allstate was the only company that was really helping their clients ..."

Her house did not burn, but she was evacuated from her home for two weeks with her family of five.  She had no idea she had coverage to help her with the extra expenses until I called her to see if she had been evacuated.  This is the reason why you need a good agent.......

Jason, I just spent a week up in LA for further training...word has it, one of the cheapie online companies are starting to use agents. I guess the no agent Idea is failing. Interesting, isn't it?

That is VERY interesting.  The retention without an agent is far less.  It just does not make sense to me to be able to purchase insurance online.  You have to be licensed to sell insurance, so that you make sure people are protected correctly, yet most people especially those who buy online have no clue what they are buying.

Exactly Jason. But people who look at price verses value can find out when it's too late. Face it, the insurance Industry as a whole needs to look at profit. To be able to pay their insureds for their losses, they need to either charge additional premiums or add agents. There just isn't any other way to make it work.

We could even look at it as using a Realtor Verses selling on your own. Hiring an Attorney, using a financial planner, Verses winging it on your own. Insurance, just like any profession, people rely on our experience, licensing and training to help them in the most important areas of their lives.

Jason, you might like this analogy. I was with agents from across the country last week. One guy brought up a very good point. Having the cheapest insurance is like driving the cheapest car. If having the cheapest insurance is important to you, why not drive a YUGO? You drive a nice car because it's safe, has features that you want and you don't mind paying for it. Do you want to have the cheapest insurance and drive the cheapest car when you are hit by a semi truck?
