We often complain about not receiving good service but there are some things we can do to improve our chances of getting the kind of service we deserve. Granted it is not fool proof, these tips will help.

Smile... and mean it: Show some interest in the person serving you -set yourself apart from other customers.

Become a regular: Businesses like regular customers, so stick to one store and get to know the people helping you.

Say please and thank you: So many people forget to be polite that you'll give your server a nice surprise even if your order comes back wrong- be nice, people make mistakes and it isn't the servers fault anyway.

Go when it's not busy: If you can, avoid peak times so the sales associates and waiters won't be so rushed.

Know what you want: Be clear in your mind about what you'd like and you'll make it easier for the store or restaurant to give you good service.

Melissa, Sometimes when the person who is taking care of me seems to be having a bad day, I crack a joke or talk about something happy.  That usually puts that person in a lighter mood and I get better service.

All good points. I waitress during my college years and beyond. Customers learn the do's and don't especially if they are regular. Lousy waitresses learn too. Like not waiting to the end to be pleasant.

Hi, Melissa! What a great post - and so true! It does seem as though customer service is lacking in this country at times, but I also think customer behavior can contribute to that!

How true, diners are a great place, the waitress are a great source of information and referrals.  I did not think about going during off times, great suggestion thanks.

Great post.  I believe that if we want great service than we should respect the server and they will in return go out of their way to make your dinner great.
