While I put together the piece on 'Positioning' associated not only with Pinehurst, NC real estate but real estate for sale everywhere, I noticed something unsettling with my renewed efforts on Active Rain.

While checking my SERP for the Pinehurst real estate sites this morning something very scary happened - all the sites I had put a reciprocal link back to Active Rain on fell tremendously.

On the 2 Pinehurst real estate sites that I placed Active Rain links on the homepage fell either completely off the charts or from the 1st page to the 10th page -in the 90s.

On my main site I went from a top 5 to barely hagging on to the top 10, and I put the link on an obscure interior page.

This wasn't just 1 search engine but spread across the main 3.

Now I have experienced a sudden drop on 1 site or another after having worked on it or when there had been problems with the hosting company (yep - Advanced Access) :( , but I have never experienced a universal drop across the board like this from multiple sites and multiple search engines.

I have seen placing a link from my site affect the serp a little then bounce back a couple of days later, but with this I don;t know what to expect.

Most of us here, well at least some of us here do our own seo work and know the effort it takes to get our site ranked high enough to be of any value, and this I just don't know what to think.

I'm not in panic mode yet - and will probably leave the Active Rain Links where they are for the time being, but anyone who has experience with this and can predict the outcome or that has a viable solution to get my Pinehurst real estate sites back up in the serp, please post back ASAP.

This is my main Pinehurst Real Estate site, this is a developing Pinehurst site and this one is for Village Acres of Pinehurst.

(I am going to have to edit this after I reboot - new laptop with Vista and touch pad buttons have quit - and it won't let me open dialogue boxes or the html editor - but it is still a great day ~ somewhere :) ) (got the laptop working again - I love Microsft Vista - when it works ;~) )

Don are you thinking that simply the act of having the AR link on your landing page is the sole cause of your position drop?

That is the only thing that has been done across the board to the sites.

If I had thought it would have this great of an impact I would have done 1 site at a time and waited to see the outcome.

As I have added links to my sites in the past and each time I would drop for a few days then work my way back up I could see if it was worth the link or not.

This is a different animal altogether, Multiple sites - different hosts - same results.

Now I need to figure out how to edit that post since I have just rebooted and everything is working again ~ for now :)

A follow up ~ the Sunny Side if you will.

All my sites have 'slowly' been creeping up in serp for several months. They all needed attention and added content which I have and have been looking for a time to add it.

I have worked on wholesale changes on my Pinehurst Real Estate site(s) before and saw them drop for a month or so before they again began to surface.

Now that the bottom has fallen out - I don't need to worry so much about making needed changes and adding content ~ etc.

So the Sunny Side of the 'Active Rain's thrist for Juice' I'm supplying is that it will allow me a window of opportunity to make some changes without fear of hurting my serp ~ I mean what is the difference between 90 and 900 ~ 1 hit a month ~ really?

SEO is such a strange thing...sometimes its like chasing ghosts. I'm interested to see what you discover. Have a great week.

Don,  My primary site is well positioned in the search engines and was so before I joined AR - I certainly hope it doesn't fall off, Karen Kruschka www.e-virginiarealestate.com
