Dr. Seuss Celebration at Written Words Bookstore Shelton CT

Read to your kids!I started reading to my son before he was even born. I would read articles and books aloud hoping somehow we were connecting. Did a lot of singing too, but that’s a whole other story.

Then when he was born, I continued to read daily to him. I'd read him anything....the newspaper, recipes, and of course, lots of children's books.  Even before he could talk, I could tell he was understanding a lot of what I was reading. If I mentioned, turning out the light, he would point to the light when I read about it. If I read about someone going to sleep and closing his eyes, he would do the same.

He could read the alphabet at 19 months, read some words at 2 and started reading himself when he was about 3.  He went into nursery school reading and spelling. I cannot tell you what an advantage he had over other children in his class and how that early reading helped him to be an ace writer and be recently admitted into a top notch college.

So anytime I can promote a local event that has to do with reading and encouraging our children to read more by instilling a desire to do so, I am right there.

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the National Education Association’s Read Across America program, Written Words Bookstore in Shelton CT will be hosting a free, festive reading-centric event on Saturday March 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Families can come and enjoy story time every 30 minutes, face painting, photo ops with costumed characters, popcorn, and miscellaneous fun activities.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the first Dr. Seuss book, ‘And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street'.   All Dr. Seuss books at the March 3 event will be 15% off list price.

The reading event is free.  For more information, call 203-944-0400.

Written Words Bookstore is located in the White Hills Shopping Center at 194 Leavenworth Road, Shelton CT.

Barbara, my wife did a lot of the same with my oldest son, and by age 4 he was reading parts of the newspaper.  It is amazing what the little ones can do if we take the time to teach them.

Events like this in Shelton should be done in more parts of the state, and taking time to read to our kids, should be a must in the course of a day.

Barbara, my wife and her daughter both read constantly to Raphael, and it has helped with his development. They may well go down next weekend as the boy likes the Dr. Seuss characters.

Back in the late 60's when we lived in La Jolla I actually got to meet the author of Dr. Seuss.

Hi Barbara,

I love Seuss and the fact kids get motivated to read by all of his stoties. My own two plus my step sons loved his stories when they were little. I hope some day I can read his stories to my Grandchildren. I wrote a blog a few days ago about a Dr. Seuss special celebration which was held at Katy Mills Mall.

George -- Anyone I know who started early like I (we) did definitely has a child who went into school with an advantage. It really paid off for my son, but also strengthened a bond that just keeps getting better and better.

Ed -- You bet it helps. Yes, they should stop by this event.  It's not too far from you.

David -- Well, that is certainly an experience you will always remember.  Probably even means more now than then.

Bob -- The Seuss stories will live on and on. You will enjoy reading to your grandchildren some day.  I missed your post. Haven't been around here much this week. Combining busy with taking a little breather. I'll stop over and take a look later.

Barbara I had many Dr, Seuss books, I recently gave away the last few.    Reading is such an important skill and should be encouraged at a young age.  When I was younger I read a lot; several books per weeks.

The face painting and other fun stuff should draw a crowd.

Barbara, with reading being the fundamentals of our lives, such a great post!    I kept my Dr. Seuss books for my grandkids, and love to read to them!

This is awesome, Barbara! I too share your passion for reading and am happy now to read to my granddaughter! It's the best thing ever.  My daughter could say the ABCs when she was 18 months as well--I'm sure it was rote but everyone was impressed nonetheless! I guess I had too much time on my hands!

Jennifer -- I have donated all of mine as well. Yes, reading at any age is beneficial. There is always something to learn and be entertained wit.

Joan -- I'll bet you just love reading to them. There are so many benefits of reading to a child -- not just a development of a skill, but of a bond as well.

Peggy -- That's funny. My son used to get up on his little chair and recite the alphabet. The great thing was that he really enjoyed learning those letters 'performing'.  Too much time.....nah.....just a devoted mom loving to spend quality time with her child.  I cherish those times with my son.

Hi Bob -- Been dialing back a little bit here. Just too busy with work and personally. There are only so many hours in the day and I do like to get some sleep....sometimes!  Thanks for checking on me!!

Hi Barbara, This is a wonderful event and certainly this  should and will connect with many others. Your example of reading to your son and then having him pick it up very early in his development years  is a great example of exceptional parenting. Children are now learning earlier on computers but reading and understanding is the great differential and will be an inspiration for success for them the rest of their lives. Well done Barbara !

William -- Reading beats playing games on the computer. There are, however, reading games which can be effective. However, the 'entertainment' factor of the computer based activity could make the actual book reading dull and less interesting.  There has to be a balance.  Those who start young and develop the right skills are certainly setting themselves up for more success academically.  Proven.

Barbara,

You got to see a guy make a hole-in-one plus he won a car and $10 K in cash. Now that was exciting especially at an amateur golf outing where there is usually no excitement unless some idiot(s) falls off a golf cart as he has had too many beerski's.
