You probably have already joined Facebook, and created a profile there.  Did you know you can also create a (FREE) Facebook Page for your business?

Go to http://www.facebook.com/business/ -- Click on Facebook Pages

Click Create a Facebook Page

Start creating the Page.  Here's a little curiosity.  The logical category for an agent or broker would be "Local Business" ->"Real Estate", right?

But if you enter your page in the Real Estate category, the detailed information page will not give you a box for "General Information".  Huh?  Only "Public Transit".  While I love the environmentally conscious idea of throngs of people visiting my office via the light rail, I would also like to give a little general information about my company.  What the heck.  I just added the general information under Public Transit.

If you decide to call your company a "Brand, or Product",

...  you get these fields for general information,  but no field for location.

Oh well.  Moving right along.  Just go ahead and add/edit information.  You can also add photos, videos, and events.

This one took me a while to figure out.  Want to access your page again?  Go to your Profile and look at the items in the left column.  Click on Page Manager.

Need to delete a page?  Click on Page Manager, go to the Pages tab.  Click Edit Page

Then click Delete Page here

To create another, different page, click Page Manager, then look down at the bottom navigation, and click Businesses

It has taken me the last couple hours to sort through what should be simple navigation.  Maybe this will save some time for someone else!

If you want to thank me, you can go to my new company page on Facebook and become a fan:

I put my listing under professional service so that I could give a general description. I'm not exactly sure what they mean by the "real estate"  category.

Ginger -- I think you need to be a member to create a business page.  However when you create the business page, there is no reference on the page to who created it or the identity of the administrators.

I 'spose you could join under an alias and/or put mimimal info/business info only on the profile page .... and not add any friends or applications .... just for the purpose of creating a biz page .... but you'd miss out on the friendship and interaction part.... ??

Great instructions.  I wish I had found this before I set up my page.  It took me a while to figure it out,  I just wish they had an option to send out invitations to your friends to become a "fan of the page".  If you start a group you can send invites, but not the business page.  Good Job.

Good work Cheryl!  What are all the benefits of having a business page instead of a regular page? Can u have both?   Would it be better to just have business stuff on your regular page since that is the one people will visit the most like for social purposes and see ur business stuff.  They may not be likely to see the business stuff as much if it is seperate?  Just some questions u can hopefully help me out with.

Great blog! I just did one myself, check it out and let me know your feedback! http://tinyurl.com/3jryvf

(Feel free to become a fan!)

I am experimenting with it, I want to see how viral a small business's page can be comparing to big companies like Lego, Guiness, Slurpees, etc. where they already have large and viral audience built in (i.e. college kids). I have been doing a lot of reading on facebook. Their demographic certainly has shifted a lot since last year.

Cheers,

Cindy :)

Cheryl - I have what seems to me to be a dumb question - but going ask anyway :).  I have a personal page on FB - if I am understanding this correctly, I do not need to create a new profile to have a business presence, just add the business page.  In addition, this business page does NOT link back to my personal page???  Did I get that right?

Another question - in addition to being a mortgage planner, I am also in the mortgage education field with an industry focus vs consumer...so I might decide at some point to add a second business page - is that an option?

Thanks so much for laying this out - it was on my list for Jan 2009 to expand my FB presence, but was overwhelmed with the research I was going to have to do - you saved me countless hours!

Cheryl - thanks for such great instructions! I began 'playing' with personal page but didn't know about business one at all...somehow Facebook was not on the top of my list...don't exactly why but I think there is so many things aroud to try etc, etc...but I hear more and more great stories about it so I think I should approach it more seriously...don't I?

Happy Easter!

With smiles, Bo

Does this work the same with the newer interface of Facebook? Do you wind up having both a personal page and a business page for the same facebook user?

Good post Cheryl Thanks,

Do you know if its possible to move certain friends under your business page(s)?  I would really like to keep my personal FB page and my business FB page friends (prospects or work related contacts) seperate.  Is there a way to move existing friends on your personal FB page to your business page(s)?

Facebook has some great features but I find that figuring out how to use them can be challenging at times...

Hi Cheryl,

Does the Business Page incorporate itself into my existing page, or is it an entirely different page?

Thanks,

Just struggled through setting up my Facebook page this morning, and then I found your excellent post with all the answers.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to put a Facebook Badge on ActiveRain.  Anyone know how?

Ralph,

First you need to grab the Facebook badge code.

Widgetbox has a wizard to create the badge code here:  http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/blog-badge

Then, back at Active Rain, click My Home in the navigation menu bar, then click Settings in the left hand column, then paste the widget code in the Blog Description box.

Jeff Turner made a How-To video a while back (applies to any and all widgets)

Thanks for the great post.  It's been on my "to do" list all week to work on my business facebook page.  We're really enjoying using facebook to stay connected with our friends and clients and are ready to take it to the next step.

Thanks for saving me some research time!

Cheryl,

We just set up our business facebook page.  Can you tell me how you added the "Agents" tab.  I only see a few options to chose from.  Can you add more tabs and how do you customize them?

Thanks!

Cheryl,

If I want to post an article or video that I am reading, and the the publication allows you to 'share it on Facebook' - how do I post it to my Business Page? The default seems to want to post it to my profile rather than my business page.

Thanks in Advance

Kristal

The step by step tutorial is GREAT!

I have several Facebook pages but the most relevant one for Active Rainers is Social Media Marketing For Real Estate & Mortgage Professionals. I also just wrote a guest post on a Technorati Top 100 Small Business Blog on 5 Ways to Promote Your Facebook Fan Page. I hope you can find some value there. My article is on page 1 of Delicious and TweetMeme right now. :)

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary."

Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.
