Website to Provide "Transparency" in Colorado Hospitals

I read an article this week online through the Denver Business Journal that I found very interesting. A new website has been launched, The Colorado Hospital Report Card, allowing potential hospital-seekers look & compare facts such as cost and quality for Colorado Hospitals. It is the result of House Bill 1278 that "required Colorado hospitals to report on clinical measures that let consumers compare health care services."

The website's homepage states that it has the "primary purpose of ensuring that statewide hospital data and clinical outcomes are made available to the general public in a clear and usable manner."

The article in the Denver Business Journal says that the billing data will be updated annually. To read the article in its entirety click here.

Just having a very cohesive list of all of the Colorado hospitals in one place is a very nice feature.

It will be interesting to see how this website evolves overtime. It should be a good resource to Colorado residents.

Resource is right! For so long many have felt that only their community hospital could help them. But I've noticed hospitals competing. Hopefully all of this will mean better patient care.

This is a growing trend toward an open view of hospitals and the health care industry as a whole. As a country we spend 16% of our GDP on healthcare, compared to less than 10% in other industrialized countries.

Steve--I will have to check and see if there is something similar in MN...This is a great idea. Understanding the quality of care and costs at your local hospital is essential before you need to go to one...Colorado residents are fortunate that there is and easy online resource available.

I've heard of this, but if I'm in a ambulance, I am not going to be asking for the report card of a hospital before they take me to one. I think most people will still continue to drive to the hospital closest to them or the one their medical insurance will pay for.

Hi Steve - what an awesome thing for consumers to have a site like this to go to for that kind of info on hospitals in your state. It would be terrific if all states would follow suit. We really need to be able to this kind of info as a resource. This is great for the residents of Colorado!
