I've lived in Bryan/College Station, Texas, my entire life except for a few years away when I was first married.  As a child I remember us waiting anxiously for the annual Christmas Parade.  I remember when it was held in downtown Bryan instead of on Texas Avenue.

I had the pleasure of being in the parade three times.  The first time I was scared to death.  I was a senior in high school and in the "Lass-os" the pep rally team.  We marched down the streets. I was so afraid I was going to get on the wrong foot, but I didn't.

The second time was when my real estate company in the 1970s, McCool-Hogard Realty ,made a float and we entered it into the contest and won  first place in the commercial division.  If I rememeber correctly, we built the float in Bonnie Hogard's garage with Sarah Norman, Margie Stibora, and our other agents designing and building it.  If you participated, let me know.  All agents' children got to ride on the float.  We had fun.

The third time was in the 1980s when my daughter Leslie McCool was a cheerleader at Bryan High School.  They put together a float made like a space ship, if I remember correctly.  My husband Clay was always liked by all the high school kids so he helped them make a structurally sound float.  I remember the kids had so much fun.  Clay & I rode inside the cab of our truck that pulled the float.  All the cheerleaders were on the float.  We won first in a category, don't remember which one.

Those were the fun days!  We were always involved in community activities when the kids were growing up.

Be sure to go see this year's 81st annual CHRISTMAS PARADE. It is themed "Holly Jolly Christmas" and begins at the intersection of Polo Road and University Drive then goes north on Texas Avenue to Sulfur Springs Road.  It begins at 2 p.m.  Come join the fun.

Support the community.  It takes a lot of time and effort to build a float or participate in some way.

Seasons Greetings Kay I moved from the suburbs of Maryland to Georgetown, DE just over 7 years ago.  The things that take place in a small town are so much fun.  We have Christmas parades, Holiday tours and singing Carol's in the County Seat (Georgetown, Circle) where they collect Food & Toys for the needy.  I usually get a group together to attend several of the parades its so much fun!  Even though my kids are getting to old they still humor me and attend.

Happy Holiday!  And thank you for sharing your memories!

Katie, Yes the small town community is great.  I love it.

Hi Kay,

Your recollections makes me look even more forward to the parade.  It is amazing how much the Bryan College Station area has grown and changed since the 70's.   I cherish the memories of visiting Santa at Manor East mall.   Since it was a small mall, it seemed like you found yourself more immersed, for lack of a better term, in the holiday spirit  as compared to the big expansive malls.  Great, memory invoking post.:)

Hi Sondra,  Yes memories are to be cherished.  Enjoy the parade.

Sondra,  Sounds like so much fun with fond memories.  We are going to the Clifton Virginia Holiday Home Tour tonight.  The town bustles with energy and cheer as people walk through the streets, homes and neighborhoods.  It is beautiful every year.  We have a wonderful evening and it is very community oriented.  Have a great time at your Holly Jolly Christmas Parade. (81 years!)

We used to enter the Blue Boo in the parade. It was hard because it was a standard transmission. But the crowd liked it anyhow.  Got pictures of the floats you built?

Kathleen, The smaller communities come alive during the holiday season.  It's a happy time of the year.

Trey, I will have to dig through my albums to see if I can find photos.

Kay, it is a lot of work building floats for a parade. I was in 4-H growing up and we use to build floats for it.  I have been in the Tomball Holiday parade several times.  You are right it is all about community!

Hi Marchel, Yes it IS a lot of work building the floats for a parade....but so much fun.

Kay: I grew up in a small town where we had lots of fun parades. I always enjoyed watching the parades and my favorite floats were the ones that threw candy out to the crowd.

Hi Jill, Yes Bryan & College Station were separate cities at that town and both were small.   Now the two cities have grown together and if you didn't know where the city boundaries were, you would think it's one city.  It IS more like one larger city to me.  The people are the same, looks the same, just different governments.

Kay,  Thanks for reminding us about the parade, I am going to try and make it, even if it rains.  My Christmas memories as a young girl are of San Francisco, in particular the tree which stood in the center of the 4 story "City of Paris" department store.  It was open in the center all the way to the roof and you could see the tree from every floor, and then there was the man in the gorilla suit standing on the corner playing the trumpet (only in San Francisco). Oh yes there was ice skating in Union Square. Stay dry and enjoy the parade.

Hi Stephanie, Yes only in San Francisco...  Ice skating would be great.

Kay,

Thanks for the post, it made me think of the many times I too was in the parade for  girl scouts, Shy-Annes, St. Joseph School, Screened Images and a few others, always a lot of fun!  I did not make it out this year, since I was helping with an open house, but my sisters and nephew made it and said they had fun so that is good.  I hope to make it next year, my little girl will be older and can hopefully get a kick out of it!

Kay, I have had siblings participate in the past two parades, including yesterday's Christmas parade.  Seeing them wheel by gives you a warm feeling.  It is neat that they are able to participate on Mrs. Lassiters's P.G.M. Homeschool Choir's float.

Hi Jody, I'm glad my post reminded you of parades of the past.

Hi Nathan, It's great that you got to enjoy your siblings riding on a float.  I bet they were excited.
