This is taking dog training to extreme levels.

On engadget.com this week Austrian Researchers train dogs to use computers.

St. Paul beagle extraordinaire Daisy already does it... if they don't keep an eye on her.

Today is Mingle with our Mutts at the Franklin County Dog Shelter in Columbus...That's what I'm blogging about on ColumbusBestBlog.com today... and it is NOT only mutts in the sense of mix breeds.  TBuddy and I on the couch here are full bred canines to "rescue" in Central Ohio.

Breed specific as well as non breed speicific rescue groups participate in the Mingle With Our Mutts event that is the first and third Sunday each month at the Franklin County Dog Shelter at 1731 Alum Creek Drive, Columbus, OH 43207.  Mingle With Our Mutts in noon to 2:00 P.M.

I wrote about adopting a new "family member" for the holidays....

I've adopted two "rescue" dogs. They were both so happy to have a home and a human to love they did not expect a  a computer, cell phone or much of anything... well maybe a chew toy or two... and a couch to lie on.

Here's my dog Buddy and I sharing a couch... I am the big lump in the back with  a cat sleeping on top of me.

Lol, Maureen it looks like Buddy has a better deal on the couch space than you do! Nothing like cozying up with our furry friends. Ginger

he's a couch hog. He's long, he can curl up but he prefers that I do.

All three of you look extremely comfortable - enjoy your 4-legged friends, they never talk back.

We were probably very comfortable. The cat died of old age a couple of years ago.. the new young male cat gets along better with the dog. It was funny that the old girl cat, Piwacket would sleep with us on the couch because she despised Buddy. She snarled, hissed, spat and swiped at him all the time. thanks for the comment Ira.

I have a buddy too. My kids keep bringing their dogs home and we are up to 4. Oh, my. Not much room in the bed anymore. Thank goodness, we have a KING.

My dogs better never learn the computer, we fight over the good ones NOW.

Both of my dogs would probably be dead if we had not given them a home.  And the last 5 I picked up off the street I was able to find homes for.  We're not always lucky with that.  I'm always glad when I can pull it off.  Fix those pooches people!

Missy   Buddy can still get on the couch but the bed is too high for him to get up on.  I doubt he'd have the dexterity to use the computer... but a special computer with a touch screen?  Maybe?

Neal another pet group??? OK maybe....no... I have it in 5 groups... It really needs to be in the "My other blog is..." group... the RL Group?  Maybe not... hmmmmmm.  I did.

Maggie and cats... people fix those cats too.  We were talking to a naturalist at one of the local Metro Parks (forest preserves inside the city in some cases)   about ferral cats recently.  I had heard from  a Metro Park  naturalist what a problem it is.

Maureen - Great story. I also got our dog from a shelter.  She is the best dog we have ever had! Our last dog also came from a shelter. Nothing is better than giving a homeless pup a home.

Sandra, Sox my first dog was a small town dog that a real estate agents mom brought to town, he was the last dog in the litter and they just could not find a home for him. Another agent in our office claimed him for her family because it was her son's birthday that very day. I can't remember if he was 8 years old, or 10 years old or what but Sox was going to be his responsibility. A month later they decided Sox did not fit their family, the son was not ready for the responsibility, so we went over and my husband got to meet Sox and we adopted him that day. Buddy is from the Capital Area Humane Society. Caesar the kitty was a street cat that was adopted from CAHS as well. Giving an animal a home can be very rewarding... I wrote on my other blog about our dog we got for Christmas when I was a kid.. pure bred I guess the backyard breeder variety (hope it was pre puppy mill.) I don't know if there were rescue groups and shelters waaaay back then..

Maureen - That is a wonderful story. Our current dog I got from our local animal pound - right before Christmas. My youngest son was begging for a dog and he only wanted a golden retriever. I could not find one, so I figured I would go to our local pound and give a unwanted dog a home.  As luck would have it...there was a pure breed golden retriever just waiting for adoption.  She was only about a year old, housebroken, and already trained in basic commands.  She has been a member of our family ever since! She is the absolute sweetest dog I have ever had.

Hey, the Budger! Haven't seen him for a long time. Did Mark take this photo to prove that you don't blog 24 hrs a day, even though it seems that way?

Sandra good story about getting a pure bred at the pound.  They are such beautiful dogs.

Elaine that is an old photo, at least two years old...  Piwacket's been dead over a year.??? That picture could be 5 or 6 years old.... even bigger I can't see enough of my hair or clothes to know when it was taken.  It was at Christmas time but this could be me and Buddy most evenings.  This is what happens when I try to watch TV.
