11 Comments on Giving during the Holidays...Why not all year long?
Hi Colleen,
I think it's great what you're doing and believe everyone should think about those in need all year long. I wish more people did what you and your associates are doing! Keep up the good work!
We have a friend who will not be alive another year and is very poor, can hardly walk and is in bad shape physically. We give money, clothes, food, etc to him all year long. It is disturbing that folks right down the street are being forgotten about! Find someone in your area who truly needs help and do so all year long.

Steven and Marti,
I agree, there's so much need out there. I think the most important thing is to do "something" but comitt to it on an ongoing basis. While it may only be one drop in the bucket, but that's how the water rises right?
Laurie,
Thanks for the kind words. It's extremely rewarding.

Colleen,
Yes, that is how the water rises! Our friend is so thankful and appreciative to have any help. Seems to make his grim life a bit more comfortable.

Colleen,
I agree 100% that we should give all year long to those that are not as unfortunate as we or to organizations that we believe are trying to make a difference. But, how do you determine which organizations to donate to? I was baffled until I read an article in Smart Money. They suggested to look at the companies financial statements to make sure at least 75-80% of the donation go towards research (or whatever the intentiion of the organization). This was great advise for me and I have narrowed down which organizations are worthy of my hard earned money!
Colleen --- Who did your graphic? That is adorable and I want one lol.
I actually donate and give of my time year-round. If I have it to give, I give it and it doesn't matter what time of year it is. Habitat for Humanity, Local Youth Organizations, School Fundraisers, Families I know need things throughout the year and even pet rescue centers.
People aren't just in need during the holiday's - it's just when they are under the most pressure. So many families live paycheck to paycheck and little is left over to save for these bigger occasions. I miss the "Christmas Books" I used to use at our local bank (back home that is, not here). When my first son was little I would get 2 and they had tear out sheets ($5.00 per week) and I'd do that all year long. On the first Monday in November I had $520 in that account. I withdrew $300 and that is what I used for his Christmas and the other $220 went for things we needed (new clothes was usually what we needed). Note: This was back in 89 so $520 went a lot further than it does now-a-days.
But anyway ... As your local banks if they have these savings booklets (or set up a savings account specifically for this and create your own booklets) and adopt a few families that will benefit throughout the year:
I'm glad you posted this Topic!
Hi Colleen,
I agree with you. We should always give year round. Next year I am signing up to donate 5% of each comission check I get directly to St. Jude's Children Hospital. My boss has done this for years and I think it is a worthy cause.
I am also going to give another 5% donation to Breast Cancer Research for my Aunt, who is a survivor (6 years so far).
Gregg,
Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, I just hope that not too many people feel as you do. If that were the case, we wouldn't be making strides in any areas of medicine. The reason we give to Children's Pediatric Brain Tumor research is because Brain Tumors are the number one cause of cancer death in Children under the age of 20. While most other cancer types are decreasing in incidence, Brain Tumors in children are actually increasing. Leukemia is the most common form of cancer in Children, but thanks to research, it is no longer the leading cause of cancer deaths. Pediatric Brain Tumor Research has been identified by researchers as one area of medicine likely to have the greatest immediate impact. So while our $20,000 may seem "Piddly" in the grand scheme of things....as the saying goes "ya gotta start somewhere".
You and I are not so different. You want to help the person down the street, so do I. She happens to be the daughter of a friend who is 10 years old and has a brain tumor which could not be removed completely. It will grow, and she'll have to go through another brain surgery.
Sorry, I'll step off my soapbox now. Whew!!! Does that count as a rant or just some healthy venting???
Colleen,
We are hoping Gregg is giving to "someone down the street" instead of just griping about how much someone else is giving. We all need to show some compassion, stop making excuses.
And, for the record, $20,000 can do more than just cover one surgery. How do we know? We have had several surgeries and $20k would have helped greatly!!
