Happy Birthday CakeDena Stevens got a chuckle out of me today. In a comment on a recent post, she indicated that if I didn't stop talking about food, I'd earn myself a title...The Julia Childs of Blogging!  That was my second "honorary title" this week.

The first was courtesy of a client.  During a conversation about the real estate market in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he mentioned that he had spent some time on my blog recently.  His exact comment was..."Lola, I spent half a day reading your articles.  Later on I told my wife, this is not the same Lola we knew 5 years ago...she has become The Shakespeare of Blogging."  I couldn't help myself...I burst out with peals of laughter!

What he was observing is a transformative change which has occurred in my business over the past 12 months.  Blogging has made me a better writer and communicator because I do it regularly.  But, most importantly, it has made me a better real estate agent.  Through networking with other professionals, I have gained a much more comprehensive overview of what is happening in my community, state and nation.  I have picked up tons of tips to enhance my services to my clients.  I have been encouraged to preserve and have developed a very disciplined approach to researching and disseminating information.  When, I talk about real estate now, I do so with much greater confidence.

Today, I was at a gathering and as usual was asked about how the real estate market is doing.  My answer was, "I am grateful!"  The hostess looked at me a little puzzled.  But, she said, "We hear all these reports about houses not selling and how many homes are on the market..."  I just smiled and said, "The truth is that we will sell almost as many homes this year as we Sold last year.  We just have many more people trying to sell."

The Truth is the sky has NOT come crashing down. It has not been easy.  But, we've upped the ante big time with regards to our professionalism and our skill set.  This challenge has pulled out the best in us.  We have Sold houses this year despite a mortgage crisis and a housing crisis and a consumer crisis.  We just decided NOT to participate in them.  We won't be participating in 2008 either.

The month of December is my 1 year blogging Birthday & I'm Wishing Myself A Happy Birthday.  It's also my son's Birthday.  Happy Birthday Michael...this one's for you. :)

Happy blogging birthday Lola (and happy birthday to Michael as well).

I understand exactly what you are saying here...I too feel more prepared when discussing the market now, since I've got so many different sources of information and insight right here in the rain.  Now, send some of those buyers down south...our numbers don't look that good!

Congratulations on your blogging anniversary.  I love your answer to the hostess.  It puts a positive note to the negative press.  Oh and Happy birthday to Michael!

Happy one year anniversary Lola.  You are such a polished and gifted writer, I'm amazed that you've only been blogging for one year.  Happy Birthday to Michael also!

Congratulations on your blogging birthday.

I have not participated in the real estate depression either.  I have merely worked harder and focused on what IS selling and not on what isn't.

Works for me.

Lola, happy 1 year Birthday and I hope many more to come.

Lola, Constant blogging has made me better at what I do too. Not only have alearned a lot from reading but also being able to write about what I do has made me really think about how I do it. Plus once I have written about something it forces me to do it. Make sense?

As for business. I'm down quite a bit from last year but it has still been a good year. Hard but good. I just have to keep moving forward.

Lisa, Thanks for stopping by.  The best thing about hard times is that like all other situations..."No condition is permanent"  That's an African proverb.  So enjoy the good times and know that the challenges won't last forever either.

Hi Bryant, It does make sense.  It's about integrity.  And even though it is hard, I've found it's much harder to live a life of dishonesty.  Thanks for stopping by & continuing to encourage all of us by doing what you do so well.

Happy Birthday, Lola and Michael!  (Good name, Mom!)

Lola, you're right on target when you say blogging makes one "...a better writer and communicator."  I came over because you commented on my post.  If you do real estate as well as you write, no wonder you haven't participated in the various crises.  Thanks for blogging.  I've subscribed to your blog!

"It is an ill wind that doesn't blow somebody some good."  Properties are selling in the Southwestern section of Michigan and as long as they are, we can sell them.  We just have to look at the market differently and see where the opportunites are.   I am from Saugatuck, a resort community which is about one hour from Grand Rapids.  We are more hinged on Chicago, then on the rest of Michigan and heavy in the second home market.

When I see a Lake Michigan property with a severely discounted price whether that is from foreclosure or just from a seller who wants to move on to something else, I immediately let my lake buyers know.  I also have several clients looking for rental properties that they can acquire at a discounted price and renovate and keep my eyes open for them.

Another great opportunity is blogging.  This is a whole new world and will provide many more opportunites than we can even imagine.   I am lucky enough to have found Lola at a seminar and she has been giving me private lessons in blogging.  She is contagious!  Happy Birthday, Lola.  When you get over here to Saugatuck, let's party!   Yeah!  Dee Dee
