Trashing Trust - Melinda PetersonTrashing Trust.  People often say... 'Trust me.'  Yet, it seems to be those very individuals who do things that violate our trust.  After repeat offenses, it's easy to become jaded and skeptical of those individuals.  So, how do we forgive those who have trashed our trust?

I've spent a lifetime forgiving those who have violated my trust.  From the babysitter who sexually abused me when I six, to the step-father who beat me for sport, to a brother who needed anger management counseling, to a landlord who screwed me on a commercial lease, and more recently, to a few colleagues who thought nothing of taking my intellectual property and using it without my permission... and the list goes on.

How do you dig deep and find the wherewithal to forgive those who have trespassed against you?  Frankly, I'm not sure that it's even humanly possible.  Throughout the greater part of my life, I've relied on a higher power to get me through troubling times.  And it's been my faith that has taught me to forgive and to move on, but not without learning some valuable lessons along the way.

The old adage comes to mind... 'Screw me once, shame on you... Screw me twice, shame on me.'  There's wisdom in identifying those folks who lack moral and ethical scruples, making every effort to avoid them like the plague.  While it's nearly impossible to rid ourselves of every encounter with those who are ethically and morally bankrupt, it is possible to possess certain skill-sets which better enable us to deal with their lying sack of trash behavior.

Popping pills or downing a few cocktails may be viable remedies for taking the frustrating edge off of dealing with untrustworthy individuals, but I was thinking more along the lines of possessing wisdom, understanding, forgiveness, compassion and grace.  These are the values and virtues I hold in high esteem and strive to embrace in my daily walk.

Occasionally, it's tempting to entertain fleeting thoughts of repaying evil for evil, but I'm forever reminded that some people just aren't worth the energy expended.  So, I'll leave you with one of my favorite quotes (lessons) from a very wise woman, Maya Angelou, who says this... "The first time someone shows you who they are, believe them."  Now... that's a Wow!

Mel

Trust is earned and can be lost very quickly. There are also people that can't be trusted and we need to stay away from them.

Good luck and success.

Mel, forgiveness is for us to move on, and sometimes with heinous things like you describe (and thank you for being open) maybe you don't want to forgive. Trust me, and phrases like to be honest, SOMETIMES, can be tips for BIG LIARS. Some people it is a habit and they are good people, but watch the ACTIONS following the words, then you know which.

I hear ya... Lou!  I'm learning to spot the wolves in sheep's clothing a little sooner ;)

Gary ~ It took a long time for me to share the 'heinous' things 'openly.'  I consider it therapy ;)))  And ditto on... ACTIONS speak louder than WORDS!

Fabulous quote, Mel.  I am sorry that these things have happened to you, but 'they' have not won because you have triumphed.  I made the HUGE mistake of going into business with an unscrupulous woman who would tell anyone who would listen, "I don't lie, cheat, or steal."  Of course she was a MAJOR offender of each of these, and cost me TENS of thousands of dollars until I wised up and realized that just because it comes out of their mouth doesn't mean it's in their heart.  Blessings, my friend.  Hope you are well.

Mel,

While a strong and faithful Christian, I too reach a limit when enough is enough.

That is when a favorite quote from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan comes to mind:  Vengence is a dish served cold.

I refine this to say, I have 2 sides on which you can be:  My best friend or my worst enemy.  And "trust me" when I say, mine enemy side is NOT where you want to be.

For I am extremely quiet, extremely cunning and devious, and very slow to boil, but when I do, it will be like the pressure cooker exploding.

Just give me about 30 days or less to post a blog about someone that really P___ed me off in a business deal and how I chose to deal with them.  It will take about 75 days to slowly and quietly with lots of planning and cunning come together but when it does, they won't know what hit them.

I know they are trying to stop bullying in the schools, but if it wasn't for those bullies in school that picked on me I wouldn't be the strong fighter I am today. I wouldn't be the business person I am today if I was protected from what goes on in the real world.

Melinda, a very wise and well-credentialed Realtor observed this of their credentials "(they) don't mean a whole lot unless I'm able to earn your trust and confidence.  That's where I get my real kudos!"

Now that's someone who's trustworthy!    Brian

You always make me smile John!  Thank you for your words of encouragement!

OMG... the pic made me LOL!  We live and learn from our mistakes, don't we Mimi!  Now, if we continue to repeat the same mistakes, we deserve to be spanked!

I'd like to think someone or something else will do the vengence thing Kev... it's not my specialty.  I'm sorry to hear someone is pissing in your cheerios... I hope you're able to write about it and release it... you'll feel better, I promise ;)

I think you have a blog just waiting in your noodle to be written Todd!  Life's tests and trials make us stronger... and you, my friend, are a shining example of that!

Oh Brian... I'd like to talk to that 'very wise and well-credentialed Realtor' and take a few lessons ;)))

Trust is earned and that's all there is to it Mel.  When someone says "trust me" there's no way they'll earn it from me after that point.  It's my telltale to move on!

Mel - If you can forgive those who tresspassed against you in such a fashion - you are indeed a strong woman. But you are right - holding on to anger, hate, etc. is like pouring a glass of poison and drinking it yourself. It's best to let things go and simply be mor cautious in the future.

As Ronald Reagan said "Trust, but verify."

And I do believe what the Wiccans teach - that everything you do comes back to you threefold, so be careful about the thoughts and actions you put out into the world.
