Now this seems innocent enough on face value right? A few of the seasons storms getting names when they really didn't actually deserve names? What could be wrong with that?
Well simplistically, this is going to hit you in the pocket while at the same time making the forecasters not look quite as stupid as they actually are.
You see for two years now we've been promised more active seasons with more bad storms and they simply haven't materialised.
This year we were having storms get names even though they were referring to them as "sub-tropical" - I don't remember that happening before either.
According to the Houston Chronicle, former hurricane center director Neil Frank, says as many as six of this year's 14 named tropical systems might have failed in earlier decades to earn "named storm" status.
"They seem to be naming storms a lot more than they used to," said Frank, who directed the hurricane center from 1974 to 1987 and is now chief meteorologist for KHOU-TV. "This year, I would put at least four storms in a very questionable category, and maybe even six."
But the problem is that the named storms go into the historical record which are used to figure out trends for hurricane seasons. And Insurance companies use this data to set rates. And we all know what they will use the 14 named storms this year for - I'm waiting for my increased bill as we speak.
