Hurricane season is over - storms were named incorrectly

Now this seems innocent enough on face value right? A few of the seasons storms getting names when they really didn't actually deserve names? What could be wrong with that?

Well simplistically, this is going to hit you in the pocket while at the same time making the forecasters not look quite as stupid as they actually are.

You see for two years now we've been promised more active seasons with more bad storms and they simply haven't materialised.

This year we were having storms get names even though they were referring to them as "sub-tropical" - I don't remember that happening before either.

According to the Houston Chronicle, former hurricane center director Neil Frank, says as many as six of this year's 14 named tropical systems might have failed in earlier decades to earn "named storm" status.

"They seem to be naming storms a lot more than they used to," said Frank, who directed the hurricane center from 1974 to 1987 and is now chief meteorologist for KHOU-TV. "This year, I would put at least four storms in a very questionable category, and maybe even six."

But the problem is that the named storms go into the historical record which are used to figure out trends for hurricane seasons. And Insurance companies use this data to set rates. And we all know what they will use the 14 named storms this year for - I'm waiting for my increased bill as we speak.

Ha, imagine Simon, they added Karen after a review...LOL!

Simon, I believe they are categorized by wind strength. Actually I am sure of it. Even if it's not affecting land fall.

And, according to the weather channel, 16 storms actually qualified. Do you have differing information?

Karen - they are supposed to use pressure as well. the problem is they JUST used wind speed and they also ignored the tropics. One storm formed off Nova Scotia - it was just a sea storm, but it got a name!

I see, I didn't know that! So it has to hit land? You reference sea storm. Just trying to understand, this wasn't my favorite subject.

No - it doesn't have to hit land. A sea storm off Nova Scotia is common. It didn't form in the tropics so how does it become a tropical storm?
