Stay In Touch, the other way

By
Real Estate Agent with RLAH / @properties DC / MD / VA

I went to a Coldwell Banker training event this week, 3 hours, advertised as "Prospecting", which consisted of many tried and true methods to stay in touch.  We've all heard it, we all know it.  I attended mostly to support the presenters and to show loyalty to the firm.  Oh sure, maybe I'd hear something new, or hear something again.

A few things filtered into my head...stay in touch, even with sellers who have moved out of town.

In January, I had a closing with a seller.  After the closing, I literally drove him to airport.  He was trying to schedule a Super Shuttle, and I told him not to worry, I'd take care of him.  He was an older man, and his sale had a few isaues.  When he asked why I was taking him to the airport, I jokingly said I was trying to ensure that he was taken care of and to ensure to my mind that he wouldn't be calling as much in the days/weeks to come.  (Okay, realtor humor I guess).  We had a great relationship, but I think we spoke just about every day for some 4-5 months.  Issues, and more issues, and more issues.

When the sale was completed, I think he was at least 10 years younger, and it was truly gratifying, because I know, and he acknowledged, the great level of service I'd given him.

Back to the class....I have his forwarding address.  I also know his birthday since he turned 65 just 3 days befoe his closing.  Since he's been in Vegas, we've spoken a few times.  He called to advise he'd gotten there safely.  I called to ensure a few days later that the funds from his sale had been properly credited to his bank account.  Then, just because it felt strange not to hear from him every day, I called to ensure that his Corvette had finally arrived without any problems.  But the class told me to stay in touch with this guy.

Today, he texted me.  Which he's never done, so that was quite unusual.  He texted me "when is your birthday?"  Since he'd never texted, I just called him back.  I told him, and asked "why?"  He said he wanted to stay in touch with me.

Amazing.  So, it sure seems like he's going to be added to my stay-in-touch, and that wouldn't have been true 2 weeks ago.

It's very cool to hear that your client moving out of the air yet still wants to stay in touch with you.

It's always great to keep in touch with past clients -- the relationships can be rewarding and in many cases you'll get a referral out of it. Even though that client is now in Vegas, I'm sure he knows plenty of people here in DC who could use your services!

If you're looking for other ways to keep in touch with prospects, my company Contactually builds a product for Realtors that does just that. I'd love to discuss it with you and hear your thoughts!
