Cheers to my competition!!!

Sometimes having a blog can be a temptation to find things to complain about.  You know what I mean....you get bad service at your local restaurant, from tech support or at the post office and now you have a platform to air your gripes. After seeing numerous negative posts here about our competition, I'd like to take a moment to thank them:

"In the real estate business, my competitors are as valuable as my friends.  My friends are too polite to point out my weaknesses, but my competitors are attentive, direct, and are eager to take my place if I don't do my job.  They keep me working hard and on my toes.  They inspire me to find new ways to improve my services.  If I had no competitors, I would be less professional and efficient.  I am better for the discipline they command of me.  I respect and salute them.  They have been good for me."   - Author Unknown

A very special thanks this holiday season to the following real estate agents in Connecticut:

Ann Carpenter - Heritage Properties - Niantic, CT - Ann is a favorite of the team as she is always a pleasure to co-broke with!

Randy Conradi - Prudential - Mystic, CT - Randy sold 2 of my hardest to sell listings this year and although we had a few bumps along the way, he remained a true professional throughout the transactions.

Jason and Carrie Pope - Heritage Properties - Niantic, CT - Jason and Carrie sold one of my listings.  After the contract was negotiated and signed, I discovered I made an error on the commission listed in the MLS.  I emailed them explaining what happened and they graciously agreed to take less than listed, (even though I told them that I would understand if they didn't).  I won't ever forget their generosity and professionalism.

Cheers to you Ann, Randy, Jason, Carrie and all my fellow real estate professionals (and competitors) in Eastern Connecticut.  May we all have a prosperous 2007!!

Linda this is awesome and ....professional! What a concept!  Great point about our colleagues/competitors elevating us. I like that quote you used a lot. I had an agent, Paula Reed, she showed one of my listings that was a nice home but just would not sell. Six months later she remembered it and called her client and said you know, we should make an offer on that house.  And they did. My seller was the nicest guy who had gotten transfered, and this was such a load off his mind. So Linda, thanks for giving us a platform to thank our colleagues! :=)

Thanks Carole.  Last year I did an ad with that quote and listed all the agents I co-broked with that year.

Linda, that's an excellent way to look at things. many people simply resist, and can't learn from the situation in front of them. I know I've done it. Thanks for a good article.

Linda, I appreciate your attitude, more people should learn from the way you view your competitors.

I hope you had a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TODAY.

This parallels my belief of seeing other real estate agents as colleagues, not competitors. Sure we compete for listings, but well over 90% of the time we need an agent on the other side of the transaction to make it work. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Linda, one of the most valuable lessons I've learned in life came from the book, "The One-Minute Manager." One of the points the book makes is to catch people doing something RIGHT. So many times we focus on the negative, and never reward the positive. Great job!

Linda, you're already practising what Rich read: catch people doing things right, and reward them. Pointing our what they're doing wrong is like telling someone not to imagine a pink elephant.  Besides, it's much better to see smiles than tears.

Thanks for the comments and kind words from everyone above - some of the best stuff I learn here is from the comments. One thing that has been concerning me here is some very specific negative comments about other agents.  I know we all get frustrated at times but at the very least those posts should be marked "members only".  In most cases, especially with newbies, they are not.

Thanks for noticing that comment George.  I've even emailed the AR headquarters about a particular post.  Unfortunately, they chose to feature it.  :-(
