My website was added to DMOZ!

By
Mortgage and Lending with Summit Funding, Inc. NMLS #124935

I just had to share my excitement with everybody

My VA Home Loan website was added to the DMOZ directory, the only reason I found out was because I was checking my Hittail stats and noticed a DMOZ editor had visited my website.

I ended up submitting my website to DMOZ twice, once about eight months ago and about two weeks ago.

The first time it was declined and I kept working on the site and decided to resubmit after I started receiving more search engine trafffic and my PR had went from 0 to 2...

In the Texas category, there are only 82 listings for mortgage companies...not very many for such a large state...

It makes me wonder what the editors at DMOZ are really looking for...

Dang that is a good accomplishment, I have been trying to get my site listed on DMOZ for some time but I have not made it to a page rating of two yet.  Congrats!!!!

Just re-submitted. I have a PR3

Cool!  I still haven't gotten there yet, but you can search Yahoo for 'orlando civil engineer' and my site www.mckeonengineering.com is number5 and you can search Google for 'orlando civil engineer land developer' and my site is number 1.  Kinda reversed.  Normally one would think you would get listed on DMOZ first.

John, Congratulations!  That is huge!  I submitted my site about 6 weeks ago and have not heard anything since then.  Do they send you something either way?

Ray,

They will not send you anything at all...just watch your traffic stats to see when they come...then after they have visited, check the category that you submitted to.

Got it!  They are like web ninjas and come in the dark.  If they havve visited and you are not in the directory then I guess you got denied, right?  How long did it take for them to visit the first time?

John,

Good news. Submitted my website about ten months ago and still haven't heard a peep from them, one way or another. Haven't heard much talk about it lately, so maybe its influence is waning.

Congrats on getting in....I have been waiting for months. From what I have read this is an importtant site to get into for increasing your position in the serps although I have also heard it has lost some of its luster.

Hey congrats! Getting into DMOZ is a feat, but I don't get the initial problem you had. I was a DMOZ editor at one time, and only incomplete sites, sites that duplicate content, or those with redirects or other forms of subterfuge are rejected.

The real difficulty getting into DMOZ is that 80% + of its categories do not have editors, and they have difficulty attracting the kind of people who will commit themselves to the project.

Most of us who want to get into the DMOZ will need to volunteer as editors. It's not difficult. Nor is the work very demanding. You only need to post one site in the first month, and login and post every four months thereafter.

I tried to volunteer for the regional category that lists real estate sites in my region last night, but made the mistake of being honest. Because I had been a DMOZ editor, the submission form redirected me to the reinstatement form. The problem with that is that I do not want to pick up on the category I edited when I was an editor, and I'm not certain that they won't require that I do.

The people who run the show at DMOZ tend too often to be petit tyrants, hence their difficulty in retaining editors.

Right on John! I have heard of people having a hard time getting their website's listed in DMOZ. I have never had a problem with it?

Jim,

I've tried to become an editor since 1998 and have never had any luck...lol I probably filled the application out wrong, I think I have only applied twice...

Very interesting outlook though!

I've been trying to get my site on the DMOZ directory for 8 months.  I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't show up.  I guess you have to stand out to them. Thanks for the post, now I know why my company is not listed on their directory yet. I will keep trying and hopefully succeed like you did.
