Fa la la la....Ice storm brings out nutty drivers, again.

Living in the Northern climates allows us to experience what few in the South ever get to enjoy.  Sure living in Florida....it rains hard enough to slow cars to a crawl, the winds rip shingles off the roofs sending them like Frisbees rockets though pool screen, Dallas and Atlanta get black ice....even a rogue storm can paralyze Southern states because of the lack of equipment.

In the North we have the first snow jitters....people have driven on snow and ice for years...but the first one is always special.  Buckle your seat-belt check your air bags.....they whiz by like it was smooth dry pavement!

I watched one intersection for 15 minute and seen 4 fender benders.  Nothing significant...just bruised egos and dented cars.  You could tell who was going to get hit....it was like an arcade game only you didn't have to put in any money!

They would zoom up to the lights and hit the brakes as though it was dry....and slam, crunch, thud.  A couple got out of their cars....they were really nuts...slippery and looking over the damage like they were going to send in an adjusters appraisal.

The ditches we lined with people thinking they could be the one that make that little move to get ahead of the next guy.....and the twirled gracefully off into the ditch.  No real harm no injuries other than maybe pride and the spouse they face when they get home.

The innocent ones are the real losers in this type of driving event.  Many are cut off, spun off into the ditch having no choice.  You can only hope someone got the plate number of that bat-mobile.  Or the ones sitting at the light and bam!  All of our insurance premiums go up over this type of driving.  I drive my big Avalanche during these events.  They can hit it but the likelihood of injury from cars is minimal.  The injury from a semi.....well let's just say you can not prepare for that type of collision.

I sat at an intersection in the service on a lawn chair during a ice snow event in Alabama....watching the Southern drivers whack each other.  Less than an hour there were 10 collisions.  Being raised in the North we expected the driver to be novices and they were.

Every year we can count on the same scene repeating itself until we have had a few days of driving on the ice and snow.

Does your area have something that bring out the crazy in drivers?

We got the lovely freezing rain, ice & snow yesterday in Illinois. We always get it then it swoops over the lake and hits you worse! :) Sorry about that!

Gary,

in Mexico the sun and the hot weather brings crazy drivers all the time, many accidents, it is not funny, but it sounds like that. Nice to see you, did you give any update about your new toy / gadget ?

thanks

Ray Saenz

Saturday night I was at a friends home just a mere 2 miles away.  At 10:00 it took me 20 minutes to get home.  I've driven here all my life and am still amazed at the goofy way people try to drive on slick roads.  Thankfully I only saw 2 fender benders and they were minor.

It isn't just winter here either.  During the summer when fish flys are out the roads are awfully slick with them lining the intersections under the lights!

Here in the D.C. area we have such a menagerie of folk that the littlest rain causes gridlock!  Then when the snow starts... {shakes head}

It was a little nutty...mostly the rear wheel drive cars getting stuck! I showed two houses in the mess, but all was well. Ah, winter...

Gary:  Nice topic for a post!  I've seen the southern mental block with snow... they shut down major cities with an inch or two of the stuff!  I'm really just amazed when folks lack the ability to drive here in Rhode Island.  After living in Syracuse, NY (college) and South Royalton, VT (law school) for a number of years, you tend to appreciate the expertise of the snow country drivers.  Rhode Island is ridiculous (#1 state for worst drivers in the nation!).  It's a terrible combination of the idiots who drive too fast through the snow and the overly-cautious scaredy-cats who drive at a snail's pace at the first drop of precipitation (even on the highways!).  I give up.  Oh well... 5:30 pm... it's time to battle the fools... wish me luck!

Hi Gary, Its funny you should ask. I find it incredible that not only does the snow an ice bring out the crazies but a little rain can do it too.  Our Winters are pretty mild and believe it or not a little snow or even the possibility of snow can lead to school closings and madness at the grocery stores.

Hi Ray, I just used my new "TOY" today....I was able to cut a single frame from a video and use it in a cable brochure!  Interesting I am working on a little flash video that illustrates how much of an opportunity this little Gizmo can bring to real estate.  I think you will find it interesting.  Thanks for the comments Ray.

Hi Kris, two miles two fender benders....that's a bit much....we had over 40 wrecks or pit stops in the ditch in about 3 hours...I saw four just going to the office.  Thanks for the comments Kris.

Hi Matthew, it makes me shake my head too!  I watched a guy change lanes, step on the brakes and turn....causing three cars to spin avoiding the people avoiding....I am sure the air was blue!  Thanks for the comments Matthew.

Hi Keith & Robin, I have been traveling through Atlanta when cars were everywhere BUT on the highway after the snow storm a couple of years ago that dropped 10" in your area.  The police suggested an alternate route....Mississippi!  Thanks for the comments.....you get black ice too.

Hi Sally I think the media has a bit to do with the disaster of over dramatization...we do get winter events but for the most part common sense seems to go out the window.  Thanks for the comments Sally.
