I Could Tell You, but I’d Have to Charge You

Yellow Flowers        Have you ever read an article or blog and felt the timing and topic was so perfect that surely it must have been written just for you?  That is how I felt after reading No, You Can’t Pick My Brain; It Costs Too Much by Adrienne Graham.  A colleague had posted it on LinkedIn and based on the responses, I am clearly not alone.

It happens all the time.  Agents, sellers, and friends want to “pick my brain” and since I really enjoy talking about Home Staging®, it is easy for me to go too far.  The longer I’m in this business, the more guarded I have become, but I finally realized that after investing significant time and resources into educating myself on Real Estate and Home Memorial Staged Homes Family RoomStaging, I deserve to be paid for what I know.

It’s not that I refuse to give any information away.  I frequently use my Twitter Account (@StagingHouston) and the Memorial Staged Homes' Facebook account to share general tips and suggestions.  For me, when requests for free advice cross the line is when we are discussing a specific property.  So if your funds are limited and you want to know what you can do, I may tell you to focus on the kitchen, but I can’t tell you specifically what paint color to use, or whether you need new cabinets, Memorial Staged Homes Bedroomcountertops or floors.  Well, I could tell you, but I’d have to charge you.

In my mind, this all boils down to having confidence in what I do and my capabilities.  So please do not be offended when I do not tell you exactly what you want to know when it comes to Staging your property or listing.  This is how I earn my living and I simply cannot afford to give solutions away.

 Wishing you a quick sale!

Hi Kathy!  It's great that you've come to a point where you realize the value of YOU - many people don't understand that concept.  Have a great day!

Very good response! You shouldn't have to give it all away for free! You are a professional and should be paid like one. Have a good day!

Gary, I can't say that I don't waver from time to time but I've learn this lesson the hard way.  If I give all my knowledge away, I do not get hired.

Peggy, I agree!  Thanks for your comment.

This can be very difficult....it's easy for us to over share because we are so passionate about what we do.

Kathy, it's a fine line to walk. I have often shared too much advice to non-paying friends, neighbors or acquaintances...I'm working on becoming a bit more savvy...and I've been doing this since 2004. Lol.

Sharon you hit the nail on the head.  It is difficult to hold back when I feel so passionate about Home Staging.  It can be very difficult to put the breaks on.

Debb, you're right, it is a fine line and an easy one to cross.  Like you, I'm still working on it.

Kathy- I think this is one of the hardest things to deal with.. and not just in the staging profession.  I do agree... giving a general response is what we hope to achieve but there is that really thin line.  We don't want to appear vague or rude but yep... it's how we make a living.

Hi Kathy ~ that was an excellent article!  We have all had this experience (many times) with prospective clients who may just want "free info" so what I began doing is telling them (with a smile):  "that's a great question ... if we're going to be working together, all of that information is included in my staging services."  Then they usually get it right away!

Kathy, My biggest challenge is keeping my information to myself because I really enjoy talking about Home Staging Solutions but if I want to make a living, I have to zip it.

Maureen, Love your response!  Direct yet polite!

Kathy, thanks for the link. I am printing it out and will read on a weekly basis. It is extremely hard not to let others to pick up our brain. I should also memorize Maureen's phrase.

You're idea about printing the blog out and reading it on a weekly basis is a good idea.  The author sure hit the nail on the head, didn't she?  Thanks Anna.
