Being that I'm not a real small individual I have become well acquainted with the magical healing powers of Gold Bond.  During those warm summer months, I love my Gold Bond.

I have found another use for this magical powder when it comes to inspecting homes!  If you ever have a question if a gas appliance is drafting properly you can tell quickly if you have a small can of Gold Bond.  The little travel size works great.  All you do is fire up the water heater or furnace and once it gets going, all you do is pull out the can of Gold Bond and give a little puff of the powder towards the drafter diverter.  If it blows back in your face the unit is not drafting properly

Simply and low tech, but it works!

You're a nut, Scott.  But then, if I was running around having Gold Bond blown in my face, I'd probably be a little nutty too.

Does it stop your nose from itching.  I could use that sometimes.

I think I'd probably load my Gold Bond can with powdered sugar or flour, but then I'd be getting that fattening stuff in me.  And I don't need any more of that at this time of year.  I'm already starting my annual weight gain from lack of sweating in those hot attics combined with lots of eating.  Thanksgiving and stuff you know.

Hey, don't knock the Gold Bond till ya try it!

Some tool company use to sell a puffer filled with silica powder for the same thing.  They charged about 10x the cost of a travel size of Gold Bond!  Plus, that silica powder won't do much for chafing!

Nah, just light up and use it to detect drafts all over the house,

  • around door frames
  • around window frames
  • at the draft hoods on water heaters and furnaces
  • around the attic hatch
  • around the plumbing penetrations
  • around the electrical penetrations

Yup, automatic draft detection!

Just another useful inspection tool!  (Facetious smiley not available here)

So Bob, Do you really smoke in houses you are inspecting?  I realize you were joking when you made the comment, but it does bring up an important question.

Nah... there is no debating to be done Dale.

I think everyone on this board is professional and knows the answer in todays world.

Even Captain would agree.

If I can,t handle the three and sometimes four hours , then a tool trip to the van affords the time I need.

Ok - Let's try it. I'll rush right over to Walmart to find my travel size Gold Bond. Are you on the Board of Director's for this company and just trying to get in some extra sales before the end of the year? I'll try anytihng once.

Hey, I'm not on the Gold Bond BoD or their payroll....  But, I have bought enough over the years that I should buy some of their stock.

All jokes aside, this stuff does work for many things.

As a Scout leader I was with some Boy Scouts a few years back at a summer camp in the Ozarks.  It was raining, hot and very very humid.  The summer camp tradition of playing Spades during the night at our campsite was not going well.  The humidity was making the cards stick together.  With a little thought, I came up with the idea of putting the cards in a plastic bag and adding a little Gold Bond to the bag.  Well it worked so well that it became the tradition to sprinkle a little Gold Bond on the cards before any game of Spades!  Ahh, what you learn in Scouting!
