It's a grand old estate turned into artist studios and exhibition spaces.  Once a family compound with a large 2 story home, gardens, barns and stables, the Hui is now a well respected visual art center with accessible work spaces for local residents.  Members have access to the facilities for print making, painting, pottery and jewelry. and may sell their creations on site.  Classes are offered on a regular basis in various skills and arts.  Memberships start at $45.00 and provide a discount on class fees and gift purchases.

Open House and Holiday Festivities  December 1- 22, 2007

The annual Christmas/Holiday sale and open house event this year will be on for 3 weeks, starting Dec. 1st.  Fresh wreaths, garlands and arrangements will be made to go.  Ceramics sale, HuiPress calendars, holiday shopping, music, food, keiki projects, family fun.  Demonstrations and open studios, meet the member artists.  Unique Maui made gifts include: Jungle Gems by Eva, Black and While quilts by the Maui Quilt Guild, pottery, glass balls, paintings, photography, tree ornaments, carvings, furniture, scarves, soaps, books and bags.

When: Starting December 1 2007 10-4 pm, and throughout the holidays.

I went with my dad on opening day, to see the sale and check out the pottery.  He likes to make pottery back home, and he's always looking for new ideas.  I met a friend named Eva who makes the wonderful Jungle Gems with her boyfriend.  They were off to some other craft fairs that were all being held the same weekend on Maui.  There were some carolers singing holiday songs while we were there.  It was a pleasant afternoon with the blustery Kona winds blowing about at the outdoor pottery sale.

Makawao Maui:

Just a few miles up the road is Makawao Town This old fashioned upcountry town on Maui is a charming place to visit or live.  It's popular as a center to the ranching and farming community on the slopes of Haleakala mountain.  Makawao is still a pretty rural flavored place with a historic old main streetat the top of Baldwin Ave.  The crossroads of Baldwin and Makawao Ave is a busy spot where you can see who's going up or down the mountain, or have a Margarita at Pollis Mexican Restaurant.  There's an elementary school and an intermediate school, a public library, some churches and commercial centers.  Art Galleries, Boutiques and restaurants are plentiful, and it's a colorful lively place with locals and visitors all mingling together.  Homes in the area are mostly modest , as this is a working class community.  Some of the more affordable real estate on Maui is here in Makawao and neighboring Pukalani.

Hi Georgina, this is a great holiday presentation....I lived in Florida 5 years and it was difficult to remember it was Christmas when the temperature is 80 and the sun is shinning.  Nice post Georgina.

Elaine - well today you would probably rather not be on Maui, we are getting a major Kona storm - lots of wind and rain, with power outages and trees blown down, some roads are closed already.
