What's worse than not having something you really need? I would say having something you really need but don't use. I just heard this statistic yesterday, that only approximately 16% of Christians read their Bibles everyday, and it killed me to believe that it's true. I am always hearing people saying things like "How can we know the will of God?" or "I just don't know what to do about ______." or "I don't know where the money's coming from to pay my bills this month?". You can insert any anxious, fearful or concerning thought you've heard or may have thought yourself.

The point is, every answer to every question in our lives is in The Book. We may sometimes need some personal input but essentially every thing we need is in there. But if you don't read the Word, you won't know the Word. If you don't know the Word you are unarmed in a terribly threatening world. You can't get enough Word of God from a 30 minute sermon on Sunday. We have absolutely no answer for those who have heard the word of Darwin and hold to that without knowing the truth first.

Do you remember after Jesus was baptized and the Holy Spirit came upon Him where He went next? He went to be tested by Satan in the desert. What did Jesus (God in the flesh) say each and every time Satan tempted Him? It is written... He could have said  I'm God and you're not so get out of here. No! He quoted the scriptures back to the only other person in the universe who knew them as well as He did. It is written... man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

Here's a quick little test to see if you know the scriptures well enough. Complete this scripture, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick..." You don't have to quote the text and give it away, just an honest I know it or I don't will suffice. I trust you. If you don't know the rest of it you are missing the whole point to this text because we are not to have hope deferred or sick hearts , souls or bodies. Many people have gotten good at quoting a few verses, but without knowing the context they are as Solomon said- "MEANINGLESS".

Did you know how easy it is to read the Bible every year? It takes the average person about 70-75 hours to read the whole bible. That's just a work week to some people I know. Slice it up and it amounts to 12 minutes a day! Surely you can think of one thing you do that takes 12 minutes a day that you might sacrifice. If that is too much for you, download the bible to your iPod and listen to it in your car or on your jog or at work. Even our chickens listen to the bible in the barn 24/7... and they are some good eggs too boy let me tell you. You can go to a website and have it sent to your iPhone everyday! It's insane how easy it is in today's technology world to read the bible every day.

Do you know what was happening 500 years ago? America was being discovered, the printing press was invented, the reformation was about to take place and society was celebrating the glories of the long bow! Today we have the economic changes, the nuclear race in south Asia the dismantling of the Euro zone and the UN being run into the ground. In such times can you afford to not have God speaking to you? And God will speak to you primarily through His word. If you don't read the thing, you will be left to your own devices and knowledge,

It is written...

Proverbs 3:5-6

New King James Version (NKJV)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

Afterthought: Since I wrote this yesterday, Bonnie came home with a story illustrating this very point. On her bus, one child's mother called in to say that her boy was having problems with the child next to him and could they change his seat. Small changes in the world of the "short bus" kids can often cause problems. She was just talking with her aid that everything we need to know is in the bible. (great minds think alike) He already stated that this would be a big problem and Bonnie just said let's see what the bible says about it. Her aid just grumbled something about nothing in the bible about bus driving. Within a few moments Bonnie looks up from the bible saying "Grace has been given to me therefore I must give grace myself. She says "We'll let the kids decide where to sit! They will make the right decision." She did and all the kids picked new seats and were excited about it not upset. The problem children were separated and yet another thing happened too. Two children wanted to sit next to her aid and he felt wanted too! Yes, everything we need to know about everything is in this BOOK.

Many people think the bible is no longer relevant to today but how wrong they are! God's word has never been more relevant to God's people. Maybe that is the proplem, people who do not believe the bible is relevant today are more than likely not his people.

Mike, yes most will read the bible as a stagnant piece of writing, antiquated and outdated. We who have surrendered know different. We just keep proving it and trying to share the results. I do think we can do a better job of representing it though and we will.

I enjoyed reading your post.  I had not idea 12 minutes a day is all it would take for me to read the entire Bible.  You have to want to do it.  I have read War & Peace, Gone With The Wind, Sacajawea in weeks.  All of these books have quite a few pages.  Your blog struck a cord with me.  I'm lazy when it comes to picking up the word of God.

If only one person was convicted by reading your post then you have done an amazing thing.

Blessings from San Antonio, Texas!

I was thinking along similar lines as to how many families do not even own a bible (or religious equivalent).

Satar, What is a religious equivalent to the bible? It is a book consisting of 66 different books, written by 40+ individuals over a period of 2,000 years. It is an intricate message system starting with 333 prophecies of a coming Jewish Messiah and culminating with Him in the flesh and the start of the New Covenant with God. What could possibly be equal?

I meant from other religions, such as the Koran. Growing up with different religious beliefs and my study of religion, I must own every different type of bible available!

Satar, The Bible is pretty clear about adding any thing to it which is what the Koran does basically. The Koran also tells the reader that they must adhere to the Book (Bible) and it's teachings unless you go by the Hadith instead which many times contradicts the Koran. There is truth in all religions or they would be really easy to see through. There is only one absolute truth though... otherwise nothing is true. I do believe in absolute truth. There is nothing that compares to the complete Bible. There is nothing that compares to Jesus and what He has done for us.

I was using the Koran as an example, as I also own the book of Mormon. ;)

You also have to understand that your religion is an extention of Judaism. So you have the to consider the sacrifices of Moses as well.Lest we forget, you also condoned Sharia law, which I stated was an extension of Mosiac law. See the connection now?

Anyway, my point was that I wonder how many families are without a religious structure in place. As I look on my bookshelf, there are so many teachings of "God" and "God's word" in the form of books on my shelf.

Satar, I'm sure there are many since everyone in my generation and since, that has been through public schools, has been taught that the Bible is pretty much a book of fables. I sure hope your Qu'ran is higher on the shelf than the others... I would hate to see the Ayatolah put out a fatwa on you. And I'm not sure I ever condoned Sharia law though. Where do you read that? I believe in the grace that is Jesus Christ. In Jonah is a beautiful little scripture I just love... "Those who cling to worthless idols, sacrifice the grace that could be theirs." Cling to Jesus.

All books are equal on my shelf.  ;)

My personal take is that all religions teach the following:

1. That there is a higher power

2. How to live with one another in peace and with love.

Regarding Sharia Law, I believe you and I had a discussion last year regarding how you made disparaging comments about the Islamic faith. If that is not the case, then my apologies for bringing it up.

"Those who cling to worthless idols, sacrifice the grace that could be theirs."

I agree, therefore one must cling to God, not those who deliver his message, regardless of how you interpret their ties to God.

Satar, I believe you meant I condemn sharia law not condone it. That would be correct, I don't agree with it. As I've said before about Islam, it is not a religion of peace it is a religion of control. Many Christian churchs sadly are about control also. That said, the majority of practicing Muslims are peaceful and disregard the call to Jihad. They take the good and leave the bad. The Bible can be misconstrued by the uninformed to be the same. That's what Jesus and Christianity is supposed to be about. The Samaritan woman at the well is the perfect illustration of the grace Jesus represents. Also the woman caught in the act of adultery. Law would have said they were guilty and not worthy of life... but Jesus showed grace and mercy on them, thus restoring them. No other religion has this grace, no other religion had a God willing to die for His people. No other religion has the power that Jesus has and gives.

Now I know there are many Christians standing on their salvation and that's all they get out of it. Those are who I'm trying to address in this post. They don't know the power they have available to them. It is written... and you shall do greater things than these. No other religion has the power of the miracles as witness, no other religion offers resurrection of the dead. We know many missionaries that exhibit this power when out in the world and that is what brings Buddists, Muslims, Witchdoctors and everyone else to the only throne of grace. It is written.. I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. Any other way is a worthless idol thus forcing anyone following them to forfeit the grace of Jesus and salvation or the power Heaven on earth.

I would like to suggest one other book for you to read and put on your shelf... When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson. Blessings.

"Satar, I believe you meant I condemn sharia law not condone it."

You are correct. My apologies.

Regarding your reply, I tend to agree that the teachings and actions of Jesus were the most non-violent religious traits displayed, both in his approach to the Samaritan woman and his ability to avoid the entrapment of the villagers who submitted a known whore and asked Jesus to resolve the issue of her punishment. Both Moses and Mohammad were very violent men who killed thousands under the orders of God. Jesus was the only one who didn't kill anyone and he prevented the deaths of other people, even though they have sinned.

"I would like to suggest one other book for you to read and put on your shelf... When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson. Blessings."

I will check it out. Thank you.
