New Orleans Lowers Real Estate Property Taxes 27%

By
Real Estate Agent with Gardner Realtors, Licensed in La.

How many other cities in America can say they decreased property tax rates for 2008. A 27% reduction is great for people who own a home or condo in New Orleans. If you paid $1800 last , in 2008 you will pay $1284.44. The value of your home may have changed but people buying recently are getting a big break. You also have to remember if you live in the property you get a 75k exemption in addition. This is another reason to buy in addition to great interest rates that are below 6% as of yesterday. Check this out in more detail New Orleans Condos and find out about the additional tax bennefits of owning.

                                                          New Orleans Lowers Tax Rates

"Making good on a unanimous pledge, the New Orleans City Council slashed the city's tax rate by 27 percent to 128.44 mills, a rate that makes owning property in the city competitive with neighboring Jefferson Parish for the first time in years." That is a first.  Taxes going down?  That should help the citizens in your community.

The rates are going down and they are going to collect the same and more in the future, Such a unique idea. The amount the city collects has little to do with quality of life issues. Its the people who live here that decide how they would like to live. Less free then more work.

Eric, all my property tax's appear to have increase. In both Jefferson Parish, St. Tammy Parish and St. Charles Parish. Lowering property tax's sure make a lot of good business sense.

It is definitely making sense to invest in New Orleans right now.

It's pretty much the best time to buy there, especially considering the benefits of GO Zone.

Eric, what a deal for homeowners. We, in Texas got a little relief this year with the decrease in the school portion of the property tax.

Yes Gary I got a good break in Galveston Texas... I was very excited as it is a great motivator for people siting on the sidelines...

over 5 % from 2003 t0 2005 before Katrina?

I know that they did, I would have to run the numbers for that time period. It could be done in several ways.
