Rich Uncle's WillSudden windfall?  A rich uncle has just left you his entire estate.  How do you want to invest your newfound wealth? Consider real estate in Northern Virginia

All kidding aside, there are 837 homes currently for sale with a pricetag of $1 million or more in Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax County.  For those who can afford the ultimate in luxury, 231 of those homes are priced above $2 million.

Naturally, due to the higher price, these luxury homes tend to stay on the market longer than the rest of the homes in the area.  The average home in the $2 million plus range has been on the market for 183 days, or exactly 1/2 a year.

That being said luxury priced homes have still been selling fairly well throughout the region.  Here's the details for year-to-date sales of luxury homes in Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax County:

$1 million - $2 million:  856 sales
$2 million - $3 million:    75 sales
$3 million - $4 million:    17 sales
$4 million - $5 million:    10 sales
$5 million - and up    :      2 sales

It comes as no surprise that the majority of the ultra-luxury homes available for sale are located in ritzy McLean, Virginia, one of the wealthiest enclaves within Fairfax County, and indeed the whole country.  Of the 231 two-million dollar plus homes, 117 are found within McLean zip codes 22101 and 22102.

Hi Brian,

Nice pictures!  I would love to just go show some of those homes.  I have a friend that lives in Fairfax, Virginia and have been site-seeing there many times--what a great place.  I keep hoping my lotto ticket hits!

Compared to the Raleigh market for luxury homes, these homes seem to be a great value.

Pretty photos.  I have no rich uncle & I guess if I did my dream house would be a San Francisco loft, which would probably cost as much as these grand manors!

Brian,

Enjoyed your blog - It was presented with a real sense of humor.  And, if I should happen to win the lotto or inherit money from a Rich relative I will give you a call.

I think that anybody who has a big windfall, such as the old uncle dying.... winning megabucks...., should definitely send me a check.  I can't think of anything better they could do with the money.

Great post! When I was doing the $1M post I noticed we have one on the market here for $23M.  They must think the home is in Hollywood! I'd need a rich Uncle for that one.

JULIE:  We all can dream.  When I first started in real estate I worked for a small office in McLean.  One of the first broker opens I attended was at a custom-built $5 million home.

Brian,

Rich uncle? No, I don't have one. BUT if you know of a rich uncle who is looking to adopt someone, don't hesitate to send him my way. I am very available if he's looking for someone to safely take care of his funds. :)

By the way, those are very nice looking mansions you have there. I like how you describe the one being just under $9 million....or is it only $9 million?

Dave
