The surfing culture is a huge part of daily life here in Southern California. It's apparent everywhere you go. And where do Californians go when the surf is up? To the beach.
No one was at work today, it seems. Everyone was either surfing or out watching the surfing. The reason? Predictions of 18 foot waves, which are rare in our area. There were surf advisories last night on the weather channel, and today the surf continues to be significant.
Seems like everyone in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Cardiff was out catching the waves or parked along the beaches and hanging out at every vantage point to watch the surfing. And everyone had a camera, or their camera phone. Quite a few tripods with video cameras, and digital cameras with huge lenses.
Famous Swami's Beach in Encinitas was mobbed in the parking lot and along the bluff.
TV 8 was out taking photographs.
The coast road was jammed with cars moving at a snail's pace due to parked cars along the beaches and people (and the surfing crowd) everywhere. It was a big surfing party.
The weather today was magnificent - clear, sunny, almost 70 degrees near the beach and perfect for being out enjoying a bit of surfing, or watching it. Who needs to work anyhow? I admit I gave a few passing thoughts to friends, family and fellow AR folks who are dealing with the nasty storms that have been around over the last few days. Guess Californians have their priorities in order. And surfing is at the top of the list. Need a little soothing? Enjoy the video of Cardiff State Beach today. Online Videos by Veoh.com |
