Carlsbad Things to Do - SURF'S UP, and No One's at Work!

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. CA DRE #01490977

The surfing culture is a huge part of daily life here in Southern California. It's apparent everywhere you go.

And where do Californians go when the surf is up? To the beach.

No one was at work today, it seems. Everyone was either surfing or out watching the surfing. The reason? Predictions of 18 foot waves, which are rare in our area. There were surf advisories last night on the weather channel, and today the surf continues to be significant.

Seems like everyone in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Cardiff was out catching the waves or parked along the beaches and hanging out at every vantage point to watch the surfing. And everyone had a camera, or their camera phone. Quite a few tripods with video cameras, and digital cameras with huge lenses.

Famous Swami's Beach in Encinitas was mobbed in the parking lot and along the bluff.

TV 8 was out taking photographs.

The coast road was jammed with cars moving at a snail's pace due to parked cars along the beaches and people (and the surfing crowd) everywhere. It was a big surfing party.

The weather today was magnificent - clear, sunny, almost 70 degrees near the beach and perfect for being out enjoying a bit of surfing, or watching it. Who needs to work anyhow?

I admit I gave a few passing thoughts to friends, family and fellow AR folks who are dealing with the nasty storms that have been around over the last few days.

Guess Californians have their priorities in order. And surfing is at the top of the list.

Need a little soothing? Enjoy the video of Cardiff State Beach today.

Thanks, Lola. It was such fun chatting. I will let you know what I find out about the legal issues of blogging that we discussed. Thanks for the comment - the beach, today, was incredible. I had to keep reminding myself it was December here - still not used to it, I guess.

You are welcome, Linda. It turned out pretty well. It was kinda hazy but the surf was amazing. Glad the camera was able to pick up enough sound - that's the best part! I'm still learning about the video thing on this camera.

Jeff, The video was great!  I haven't been to the beach since I moved to Vegas and I have never been to any CA beach.  When I am ready to make the trip, you will have to give me the inside scoop on where to go.

Dude, when the surf is up classrooms and offices empty...it's been that way for as long as I can remember.  I was the sister of a surfer plus my two years at UCSD I remember classes being devoid of students, especially the morning classes.  GREAT pictures!!!!!

Diane - LOL. What was amazing yesterday was not just the number of usrfers, but the folks who were crowded along the roads and bluffs WATCHING the waves. It was like there was a big competition or something. I had a great time watching and takling pics. TOo many to share. Thansk for the compliment.

I love the rocky outcropping by the beach. Our beaches are just flat, flat, flat!

Lisa - Cute graphic. Yep, I know Florida beaches well. We have some flat ones here too, but not many in my area.

Gotta' love Southern California!  I drove down and back to San Diego yesterday and was saddened to see the incredible expanse of charred land from the fires, just off the 5...really amazing.
