In the beginning, Marin County’s Sustainability Team had a major task on its hands. As part of the Bay Area Green Business Program, the Marin Team’s goal was to unite Marin businesses in a voluntary partnership committed to helping Marin County become a sustainable, environmentally responsible community. Five years later, I think it can be said that they have achieved that goal. To date, there are more than 250 Marin businesses in the Green Business Program that have pledged to:
- Implement solid environmental practices to reduce pollution and waste
- Adopt measures to conserve energy and resources
- Encourage ecologically responsible practices within other businesses in the community
The companies involved in the Green Business Program run the gamut from small, home-based businesses to large, international corporations. Green efforts include recycling, using biodegradable products, and reducing energy consumption.
In addition to the Green Business Program, the Marin County Sustainability Team has a variety of programs designed to move Marin County toward ecological leadership. These include:
- Free energy efficiency assessments and support for installing renewable energy systems
- Monitoring of emissions, resources, and waste production
- A Green Living program that offers support and resources for individuals
