Many of you will remember the very catchy video called “Shift Happens”.  (posted on AR by Jeff Turner < here >)

An update has been published by the original authors (Karl Fisch, et al) which is also worth seeing. (8m19s)

Ted:

I loved this! This totally blew me away.  This was amazing!  It really opened my eyes and got me thinking.

When I think back to 20 years ago and DOS operating systems and the start of the Internet. Who would have imagined that we would have come this far.

This just drives home the fact that as Real Estate Professionals we need to embrace the internet even more that we already do.  After all, none of us would know each other without the Internet and this blog.  Makes you stop and think.

Thanks again for the post

Ted,

This was a pretty powerful video....and I know I never used a computer until 1999.....amazing how far we've come.  Parents might also want to keep this in mind when they complain about kids using their cellphones so differently than we do :)

Ted....that is a powerful bunch of messages in there....And just think....we'll see more of the shifting...because nothing is constant in this world ...but change. :)

Thank you all for comments and for stopping by.

I have been involved in personal computers since approximately 1979.  CPM was the operating system of choice - Microsoft was not yet formed and the IBM PC was not in the market place yet.  My first on line experiences were at a baud rate of around 110 to 300 through acoustic couplers where you placed the phone headset into little ear muffs to pass analog tones.  A star trek game was my first on line application.  The Source and the original Compuserve were content providers utilizing large business computers in off peak time periods.

The graphic interface to the internet that we know as the World Wide Web was created in about 1993 - and the world changed forever.   The personal computer became a part of virtually every household in parts of the world.   So everything that we associate with the internet has been developed in only the last 14 years.

I have instant video, voice or text communication with people in almost any country in the world.  I can access data bases of information containing more content then the Library of Congress - in most cases fully indexed and without any cost.  I can view instant digital images of the great political documents, literature or works of art from anywhere in the world from the comfort and privacy of my home.

But as eventful as the past quarter century has been for me in the world of computers - it is insignificant compared to the rate of change we will experience in the next decade and beyond.  To paraphrase Winston Churchill - This is not the end.  This is not the beginning of the end.  This may just be the end of the beginning. (He was in the middle of World War II)

I have been involved in Active Rain for only 8 months and yet I look forward to an intelligent (well, we all have our days), informative discourse with some of the finest minds in several of my professions on a daily basis representing all regions of the country (including Hawaii - Sally).  We experience triumph, tragedy and family crisis first hand as if we were there (like the recent California fires).  And we all take these experiences for granted like they have always been a part of our lives.

I wake up every day with the expectation that I will have an opportunity to learn more and be exposed to more new ideas before the sun goes down than previous generations saw in a lifetime.

As my surfer friends might say... Catch the wave.

Ted - That is a really interesting video. Thank you for sharing that with us. It is amazing where we have been and where we are going.

Ted - Wow!!!  It just means that change is good and that we all need to be much more flexible and allow the change to come into our lives.  I look back over the years and there's been so much change.  I can't even imagine what my daughters are going to see in their lifetimes.  Thank you for sharing this.

Have a great week!

Like Meg says, I cannot even imagine what our lives will be like in 10 or 15 years, let alone 25 or 50...

I keep trying to tell photolithography engineers that their technology will be a high school class in 20 years, but they don't want to hear it.

My nine year old gives his 3rd grade book reports using PowerPoint.  Unfortunately only 2 of 30 kids are using PowerPoint (or Apple's equivalent), but the teacher plans to cover it in the spring.

Give a kid you love a laptop this Christmas and watch him or her amaze you.
