Ask most any real estate agent to tell you about their business plan and they'll talk about listings taken and sold, buyer sales, gross commission income, their marketing budget and maybe some tax planning. There's one more element to your plan that can have a huge impact on your results - Giving.

The great thing about giving is that even the smallest amounts can make a big difference. Amber Riviere, a virtual assistant in Baton Rouge, LA is working on the CARE MORE Giving Circle Challenge. Here's a sampling from Amber's blog of what CARE can do:

  • $50 can send an Afghan girl to school for one year
  • $600 can keep 10 girls in Sudan in school and teach them about AIDS prevention
  • $1000 can provide a day's supply of emergency rations to 330 families

Throughout ActiveRain there are probably hundreds of examples of what you can do. There are a dozen more ideas in this post: Giving Back - a new ActiveRain group. And if you have successes or ideas to share or just want to get involved, we'd love to have you join the group!

Giving is not just about money. Think about what you can do with your time, expertise, resources or how you could leverage your sphere of influence. Imagine the possibilities when add yourself into an equation that includes the concepts of 'Pay it forward' and 'Six degrees of separation'. That's powerful!

Randy Prothero wrote an excellent post about getting involved in your community. It's no coincidence that Randy is consistently a top agent in his market. From a table by the window in a small coffee shop in Minnesota, the Retired Codgers are taking positive steps to protect our environment. Maybe this will turn out to be a variation on the butterfly effect - 'When a codger sips his coffee ...'

In the end it's not about being the top agent in your city, dominating your market area, or shattering sales records. The real question is 'what did you do with all of your success?' Just take one more step in your business planning. Instead of starting with 'I want to make $xxx in 2007', make it 'I will give _____ in 2007' -- and let giving drive your marketing, production and income.

By shifting your focus just slightly from earning to giving, you'll find that your motives are pure, your presentations more sincere and people will be drawn to you and your cause. In The Millionaire Real Estate Agent, Gary Keller calls it your 'Big Why'; for others it's called 'Yawp'.

As Winston Churchill said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." All my best to you and yours for a healthy, prosperous, generous and rewarding 2007!

Giving has always been a part of my business model and it will certainly be part of my model in 2007 as well :) I enjoy giving my time more than anything though...participating in the community that I love :)

Great post John, you said it so eloquently.   A good measure of success is how much you gave back.

Thank you for the kind words and the plug for my blog.

Scott - Sometimes our time is more valuable to the recipient than any check we could write. Community involvement has some great intangible rewards.

Randy - Thanks for the compliment. Your record of volunteerism is very impressive. And congratulations on the gold star on your post!

Thanks so much for mentioning our work, John, and that's a great way to set goals, too.  "I will give ___ in 2007."  I may have to go back and revise my business plan a little for the coming year! :-)

I've loved being a part of the CARE project.  It's created lasting relationships with some really wonderful people.  More importantly, though, it's given us a chance to work as a team to create lasting change in the lives of others.  I cannot imagine not having this in my life from now on.

Thanks again for mentioning the project.  I'm not sure that I'm making a huge impact on our goal, but it challenged me to keep thinking outside the box.  It has kept the goal front and center of my mind, even over the hectic holiday season!

John: Thanks for linking to our post. The codgers, as a group, give that which is most valuable to people in our age group—time. In the relatively few years we have left in this world, we believe firmly in service as our highest priority.

Amber - What surprised me about CARE is that such a relatively small amount could help so many people. Any time you can "create lasting change" you are making a huge positive impact on someone's life. Please keep us up to date on what you and the team are doing.

Jay - Profound point on the value of time. Younger generations who are lucky to receive that gift from 'the codgers' will likely come away with an enlightened perspective.

Coming from the school of HARD KNOCKS (my blog about rebating commissions), I have decided instead of "rebating", but to set up a God Account (per my mentor's suggestion): giving back.

Couldn't agree more the little things make a huge difference and like teachers the help can touch the future in ways we may never know.

John, Thanks for the reminder. Sometimes it is hard to find the time to sit down and figure out where we can give back that will make the biggest impact. But its important to start somewhere...I will make that happen this year.

Loreena - Excellent idea. I'm sure those dollars will do much more work in God's hands than your clients.

Teri - Thanks for your comment. Our teachers are a great resource, and their selfless giving is a great example for all.

Laura - VAs have some unique skills to contribute. Think of all of the marketing, database, and web work you do for your clients. Their are probably many organizations in your community that could use some help in those areas. Another source is your local REALTOR association. Many have a charity or public relations committees that allow non-agents to serve on them. Let us know what you find!

Jessica - Thanks for the link! When we focus on what we can do for others instead of what we can get for ourselves it works out better for everybody. I featured your post in the Giving Back group. Happy New Year!

John  Wonderful blog.  I posted about giving in a Budget blog.  My 2007 budget has 5% of net dedicated to giving.  I hope to increase that over the next couple of years.  I like the idea of saying I will give XX% rather than $XX that way the more I make the more I'm giving back!  After all the more we give the more will come back to us!  Thanks for the blog!

Excellent post.  Our charity involves a number of real estate agents, and it's important to us that their giving gives back!

The funny thing about giving back is that somehow, you always end up getting back double.  I will make time every year to do something for my community that will make a real difference.

We are currently re-writing our business plan and have already put that in! We haven't chosen a specific dollar amount, but we do have our favorite community service event in there. We absolutely love doing Rebuilding Together in Summit County. It takes us into a home that we otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to stage or design. And we get to put ourselves in the shoes of the contractors we use. At the end of the day, the homeowner and the whole team that worked on the house, are in tears of joy. It is always a very positive experience.

Thank you very much for sharing, besides the fact that give and you shall receive, it always is a great feeling to help those less fortunate.
