Ben Lomond Plantation Manor House

  • The Ben Lomond site was part of 70,000 acres of Virginia land owned by Robert "King" Carter
  • In 1732 he deeded the 8,000 acres in Prince William County to his son, Robert Carter II
  • Blood relationship enabled Robert Carter III to inherit all 70,000 acres in 1745
  • In 1776 he named the Prince William site Cancer Plantation
  • In 1791 he filed a "Deed of Gift" in District Court, setting in motion the gradual emancipation of 452 of his slaves. making him the largest slave owner to voluntarily free his slaves in American history
  • In 1830, Carter III's grandson, Benjamin Tasker Chinn inherited Cancer Plantation and moved in with his 10 slaves
  • In 1832 he built the manor house, dairy, smokehouse and slave quarters
  • He married Edmonia Randolph Carter in 1838 who renamed it Ben Lomond in honor of her family's ancestral home
Immediately after the Battle of 1st Manassas the home became a Confederate field hospital. When the Confederates withdrew in1862 Union troops vandalized it destroying furniture and covering the walls with graffiti.

After the war the property was sold and has had several owners since. Now owned by the Prince William Public Works Department the property has been restored to its' pre Civil War appearance.
  • The grounds are open to the public every day from sunrise to sunset
  • Tours of the manor house are offered Thursday through Monday, 11 AM to 4 PM during the period May 1 to October 31

An interesting site.  There are no homes out here with slave quarters - not even in a park.

It seems unbelievable that a single planation would have 452 slaves. We've all heard about slavery and know it existed, but the magnitude seems unreal.
