THE SILVER LINING CHRONICLES -  SENIOR CENTER TO OPEN FOR LGBT COMMUNITY

Another idea whose time has come.

The first senior center to specifically open for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community will be found in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan next January.

It will serve the seniors of all 5 Boroughs:  Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx with services ranging from "health and wellness to meals and technology."

Reportedly, members of this community often suffer from discrimination and isolation in traditional senior centers and Mayor Bloomberg has stated that it is time to end the "one size fits all" mentality.

While it may still be some time before this concept finds a home in the suburban neighborhoods of Long Island, we can catch a glimpse of a future where biases are brought to light and different lifestyles and needs are accommodated.

Hi Jill -- this informative post is great for a group that in many cases has been marginalized and forgotten -- good for you!

Jill,  This is a great idea.  People with different life choices deserve to feel comfortable in the senior years free of discrimination.

Hi Jill, I hope this is the start of something that will change things a bit. Everyone should have a place that they can feel comfortable and free to be who they are..especially as they hit this stage of life. We certainly have a long way to go, but I for one am glad that we live in times when people are more open and accepting of others differences much more so than years ago.

Jill, the city seems so on the edge of accommodating diversity, we are getting there too. We are all one!

Michael, this is a good thing.

Belinda - I would think they've earned that right like the rest of us.

Cindy - Step by step. The world is changing.

Ellen - If it's going to happen, it happens in the city first.

During the winter, we can barely get our seniors to come from as little as ten miles away.  But, I would imagine with great transit, they may be able to make journeys from further away in your area.

By the way, thank you for the call.   I was working on getting plowed out and snow shoveling.  You made my day with that surprise.  What a kind thing to do.

Jill, I think this is a wonderful idea and hopefully it will be an integrated part of the community quickly. Every one deserves to live happily no matter whom they love.

Ron, I can definitely see distance as being a problem. No one wants to leave the house in bad weather, unless they're forced to, but they have to start somewhere so they picked a location most likely to be successful.

Andrea - I don't know if it will be quick but, just the fact that it will be, is newsworthy.

Here, here Jill.

It's ridiculous that we still have so much prejudice in our world. I really don't get it. People all deserve to be treated fairly and with dignity. Imagine getting old and still having the same old "small minded" viewpoints stop you from living life in peace.

One of these days, this will stop being newsworthy - I hope. Good for the Chelsea neighborhood for leading the way. And good for you for writing about it.
