Monopoly housesI was perusing CNN today and came across this delightful story

The game of Monopoly goes back into the dimmest reaches of childhood.  I used to spend one week every summer visiting my grandparents on their farm in East Texas while my parents went to the Methodist East Texas Conference in Houston. My cousin lived on the farm with her parents, my aunt and uncle, and we spent all day, every day, together.  A lot of that time was spent playing monopoly, a long, long game that never ended and spanned years.  Come to think of it, it never did end - we just took a 45 year break, I guess.   I was an ace Monopoly player, if I do so myself.  (Precursor of things to come?)

Of course, when our firstborn came along, a Monopoly set was de rigeur.  I introduced our children to the joys of Monopoly as any good mother would.  But it didn't catch on with them with the same passion that I brought to it.   Sigh.  Where did I go wrong?

But this wonderful story about how Monopoly saved the lives of many POW's in WWII just delights me.  I hope it delights you, too.

Hi Tricia,

That was my kind of story; intrigue, history, and adventure!   I have spent my share of time playing monopoly--even played it in casinos!  Thank you for sharing.

Wow, that's a great story!  I STILL love playing monopoly, although I've graduated to the deluxe "star wars" version (I'm a nerd, I know !).
