Merry X-Mas or Merry Christmas

By
Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Verani Realty

Merry Christmas everyone or should I say Merry X-Mas? I used to use Merry X-Mas a lot when typing an email years ago to wish someone a Merry Christmas

I sent an email to friend once and used Merry X-Mas and found a nasty email in my inbox. My friend was very upset that I would take Christ out of Christmas. I was taken a back by this as I was using it as a short cut, or was I just being lazy is what I thought.

It was very evident how upset my friend was and he said he was sick and tired of people taking Christ out of Christmas and the more I thought about it the more I have seen this happen in our daily lives.

I started this on December 7th 2007 and never finished it. While cruising AR last year I came across someone else who feels the same way so please visit Lysa Napolitano's post that she wrote last year.

The one thing I never realized is that Merry X-mas has been around quite a while and I guess you learn something new everyday. I had forgotten Lysa had written about this last year.

Merry Christmas again to everyone.

After all the hubbub about what to say during the holidays, I resisted saying "Happy Holidays" and being politically correct.   MERRY CHRISTMAS!  Hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I heard once that the "X" actually represented a cross and that it wasn't meant to rule out Christ.  Seems like a "t" would make more sense with that logic.  None the less, I prefer Merry Christmas, too.

Merry Christmas, Jay !  I hope your wish comes true.

Jay, I have also heard the the"X" was a symbol for Christ. Some people get too upset and that certainly isn't the spririt of Christmas.

Hi Jay - the "X" does also symbolize Christ.  I heard a very detailed explanation about that on the news not all that long ago, and it was very interesting to hear the explanation of that.  I wish I could remember more of the details, I just remember being struck by the reason the "X" came into being.

Merry Christmas my friend!

Ah, Ashton, he really is a stickler about that.  I remember hearing him talk about that very passionately one time.  And I know others feel very strongly about it.  I quit using 'Xmas' quite some time ago, likely for the same, or a very similar, reason.

He was a real stickler about it. I remember Jay showing me his e-mail and Ashton was not happy about people using that term.

Jay - Merry "Christ"mas to you too!  I now make sure I always take the extra effort to type it out - I'm actually more aware now that "Christmas" is being taken out of all our schools, govt etc.  Enjoy!

Merry Christmas it is Jay. I know it's been around a long time and went over and read Lysa's post from last year. But, honestly, I refuse to give in to PC. If it wasn't for Christ, there would be no holiday regardless of how commercial it had become. It is still a time of reflection.

Jay, your friend was right, and we might have a lot fewer problems if we put Christ back into things.  Merry Christmas.

Jay, I remember when Xmas became a popular "shortcut" and I do believe it was to x out Christ from Christmas back in the sixties. I wonder if other countries do this to shorten the word Christmas in their language? I doubt it. Merry Christmas it is for me to honor the Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ is the reason for the season and as for me, I leanred when I was a young girl from my grandmother about not using Xmas.  She told me simply and calmly, do not take Christ out of Christmas and it stuck.  I do not like to see Xmas.  I wonder how it ever got started?  Was it on purpose to take Christ out or just meant to be an innocent shortcut.  Christ did not take any shortcuts when it came to our salvation, did he?  Thanks for writing a very special post.  Since this comment is being made after Christmas, I will wish you a very Happy New Year instead.
